Wi-fi router Asus RT-N12: setting up a connection to a computer. How to enable and connect Wi-Fi on an ASUS laptop Setting up an Asus router on an old firmware version

Step-by-step setup RT-N12 C1 (B1, D1) for any provider: MTS, Beeline, Rostelecom and TTK, also Dom.ru. Indicates how to properly install a VPN server. And the result of three tests is given.

ASUS routers called RT-N12 are presented in three models: B1, C1 and D1. The new firmware with a black interface is installed on the D1 router, and for the C1 it is easy to update. Model B1, in turn, simply cannot be purchased. That is, for C1 and D1 the setting looks the same, and there are also HP B1 and VP models that have the same black interface. This is what we will talk about further - it is interesting to configure the ASUS RT N12 in a new version. Your firmware number must start with a three.

Equipment and appearance

Appearance of the device

The ASUS website lists the following equipment: LAN power cord, router, power supply, two antennas and a warranty card. For models B1 and C1 there is also a CD-ROM, and their power supply produces 9 Volts. And for D1 you need 12 Volts! The current strength is 1 Ampere in the first case and 0.5 in the second.

Specifications

Each of the three routers under consideration is built on the same processor. The amount of memory and ROM is also the same:

  • Processor – BCM5357, 300 MHz;
  • FLASH – 8 MB;
  • RAM – 32 MB;
  • Wi Fi – 802.11n, 300 Mbit/s.

It does not follow from the above that the firmware from routers of one revision is suitable for others. Whoever forgets about this will receive a “brick”.

The hardware revision number is printed on the label in the top line. Example: “H/W Ver. B1".

Options and functionality

3 modes, 4 networks

Each of the three devices, from B1 to D1, operates in router, access point or wireless repeater mode. You can create not one, but four WiFi networks with different names. And you can adjust the bandwidth of each network. In reality, we are talking about one network, it’s just that all subscribers will see four SSID names, and depending on their choice they will receive different traffic. Well, the speed of “300 megabits” is, of course, a theory.

All characteristics are summarized in the table.

Quick Setup Wizard

The asterisk means “only after updating the firmware to version 3.X.” Further, LAN as WAN is configured normally in the third firmware, but not in beta. But for B1 it still needs to be found. However, in the “old interface” they do this: select the IPTV STB port, and use it as a WAN. This method has a drawback - the WAN indicator on the router will not light up.

Work in the "master"

When you first connect to a PC, the router turns on the “master”, and all you need to do is go to the website “192.168.1.1”. No password is needed. Click “Go”, set a password and click “Next”. Then the router will configure the WAN connection itself. But reviews say that this option does not work for everyone.

Most likely, the connection type will have to be set manually. “Special requirements” include MAC cloning. The “wizard” will ask for parameters, and you must fill out the fields correctly. “Router settings” is the third section where you set the password for the WiFi network.

Indicators and connectors

When designing its routers, ASUS did not invent anything. On the case of the RT-N12 router there are 7 LEDs indicating the presence of voltage, as well as the activity of 5 ports and WiFi. A short press on the Restore button will reboot the router, and pressing for 5-7 seconds will reset the settings. This is how any ASUS router works!

Rear panel of the router

The yellow ports are the home network, and the provider's cord is plugged into the WAN port.

If the WAN port on the router burns out, you can use the LAN port instead of the WAN. ASUS is a good company, but additional configuration is needed.

How to connect Wi-Fi router ASUS RT - N12 to a computer

Preparation

On the computer, the network card is configured for “automation”. The LAN port of the router is connected to the PC via a patch cord, and the provider’s cord must be connected to the WAN port. Next, power is supplied to the router: in a minute it will boot, and after 2 minutes the computer will update the address of its card. And you can open the site “192.168.1.1”. In the “wizard”, click “Go”, set a password, click “Next”, “Next”. The router will display the Network Map tab.

WAN setup

To set up an Internet connection, open the “Internet” -> “Connection” tab in the router interface. By default, the router is configured in Auto IP mode. For subsequent logins, the admin login is suitable, and the password will be the one that was set. If something doesn’t work out, the router settings are reset: a minute after turning it on, press Restore for 7 seconds.

Setting up the ASUS RT N12 router for Rostelecom

Rostelecom uses different cables - Ethernet, telephone or optical. In the latter cases, you need to know what the VPI and VCI parameters are equal to. And the WAN port of the router must be connected to the modem, where the VPI/VCI numbers are already set. There are no these parameters inside the router interface.

PPPoE

Go to the tab for setting up WAN. Select a protocol.

PPPoE Rostelecom

You need to specify the parameters:

  1. NAT – “Yes”;
  2. UPnP – “No” for starters. This is how the router works for everyone, and then you can fix it.
  3. Automatic IP address – “Yes”;
  4. DNS automatic – “Yes”;
  5. The name and password are clear from the contract;
  6. Time is better than “0” so that the router does not turn off!
  7. MTU is better than 1450, and if it works, try 1492;
  8. MRU – 1480, etc. (until 1492).

Let the rest be by default. Press the “Apply” button, and the connection appears on the “Network Map”.

The “VPN + DHCP” option can be disabled.

PPPoA

There is no PPPoA support on the RT-N12 router. By opening the “master”, you can make sure that this protocol is missing.

Internet setup

The same will happen with most other routers, including non-ASUS ones. It is not clear why Rostelecom needs PPPoA.

The efficiency of PPPoA compared to PPPoE will be 1% higher. But it’s easy to choose the MTU - always 1500.

Setting up the ASUS RT N12 router for Beeline and MTS

The easiest way would be to configure PPPoE. It is used by MTS. And the L2TP protocol “from Beeline” is now used by all ASUS routers. But with MTS the question is open, although it has the PPTP protocol, with which there are no problems either. We must remember that in addition to PPPoE, MAC cloning on the router is performed for all protocols! A PC with which the Internet was connected is connected to the router, and the “Clone MAC” button on the settings tab is easy to find.

PPPoE

On the “Internet” -> “Connection” tab, select the desired protocol.

There is no need to change anything - the router is almost configured:

  1. NAT – “Yes”;
  2. UPnP - “Yes”;
  3. IP address, DNS auto – “Yes”;
  4. Username and password – see agreement;
  5. Time – “0”;
  6. MTU, MRU – 1492;
  7. “VPN + DHCP” – “Yes”.

The new settings are “applied” and the “Network” icon appears in the upper right corner. That is, the router connects to the Internet.

Most often, MTS uses the PPTP protocol (see below).

L2TP

The line vpn.internet.beeline.ru is the name of the server for Beeline subscribers. The router has a “VPN server” field for such names, which is located on the “Connection” tab. The L2TP protocol is selected on it.

Options:

  1. NAT – “Yes”;
  2. UPnP - “Yes”;
  3. IP address, DNS auto – “Yes”;
  4. Name – starts with 089, see contract;
  5. Password - from the agreement;
  6. VPN server - see the beginning of the chapter;
  7. “VPN + DHCP” – “Yes”.

After cloning the MAC, click “Apply”. The router will establish a connection in 30-40 seconds.

You can try setting up the router for MTS. Server name – l2tp.e66.ru or l2tp.local (depending on the region).

PPTP

We are talking about the MTS provider. On the router, set the server name or one of the addresses:

  1. 172.19.1.1;
  2. 172.19.1.27;
  3. 172.19.1.26;
  4. 172.19.1.21.

Numbers may vary in different regions. And the name is vpn.local.

By setting the address in the settings, you make life easier for the router, but not for yourself. On the “Connection” tab, the setup is almost done - just set the protocol.

The main parameters for the router are login and password, server name or address, and nothing more. You need to clone the MAC, click “Apply” and wait 10 seconds.

Setting up a router for Dom.ru and TTK

The Dom.ru provider always checks the MAC address, even on the PPPoE protocol. And TTK does the same, but only using the PPTP protocol. This means that the WAN port of the router must receive a suitable MAC address. For this purpose, there is a “Clone” button.

PPPoE

For TTK and Dom.ru, the setting differs in “cloning”.

PPPoE TTK and Dom.ru

Only login and password are specified. All this is done on the “Connection” tab. The settings need to be “Apply”, and the router connects to the Internet.

Before applying the settings, clone the MAC (for Dom.ru).

L2TP

On the “Connection” tab, select “L2TP”.

  1. Fill out the password and login field (271XXXX);
  2. The router needs to know the server name (one);
  3. Other settings are default.

Click “Apply”. After 30 seconds, the router will create a valid connection.

The names of TTK servers depend on the region: l2tp.svg.ttkdv.ru, l2tp.kms.ttkdv.ru, etc.

PPTP

Both TTK and Dom.ru like to issue a static IP for the PPTP protocol.

Setting up a router will be difficult. On the “Connection” tab, select PPTP, then install:

  1. Your own IP, mask and gateway (see contract). Example for TTK: 10.10.3.200, 255…0, 10.10.3.1.
  2. DNS (both);
  3. Login and password;
  4. Server IP address. Example: 10.10.3.1, 10.10.3.36 – only one.

Clone the MAC, click “Apply”.

The contract contains 8 parameters! Or 7 if the server and gateway are the same.

  2. WiFi 40 MHz – 40 and 30 (90).

The router also coped with L2TP. The result was slightly higher than 70 Mbit/s.

The main advantage of RT-N12 is its affordable price.

Video about ASUS RT-N12: connection and setup

IN model range Manufacturer Asus has many routers of similar design, which differ in the number of antennas, the presence of a USB input and Wi-Fi operating ranges. A convenient feature is that the configuration of various routers released under this brand is not fundamentally different. Only the set of available functions on one model or another is different.

To connect any Asus model, do not rush to plug the device into a power outlet immediately after purchase. First step - correct connection cables Most routers from this manufacturer have 4 ports for LAN connections for computers and laptops and a separate port for connecting to the Internet. Insert the cables into the required connectors: the power cord provided by your provider into the blue port, and all wired devices into the yellow port. After this, plug the device into a power outlet, wait until it boots and the connection is established. As a rule, you can start setting up your router within 30 seconds after connecting it.

Turn the device over and among the information presented on the bottom panel, find the standard IP address of the router, login and password to enter the setup page. Just below this data is the standard name wireless network. If the router is 2-band (operates at frequencies of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), then you can use any of these connections.

Important! You can configure the router not only via a wired connection, but also via Wi-Fi.

Setting up a network on an Asus router

To begin setup, enter your router's IP in the program you use to browse websites. You can find the IP of your router. After the authorization request, specify the standard login and password (you can find out). The first page that will open in the interface will be “Network Map”. This provides basic connection data, information about clients and USB devices connected to Asus. You can change some of this data directly on this page, without going to specialized sections. For example, authorization parameters for a Wi-Fi network change on the “System Status” tab, in the “2.4GHz” and “5GHz” sections.

To connect your Asus Wi-Fi router to the Internet, go to the " Additional settings-> Internet". In this case, it will be useful to find the connection agreement that you concluded with the provider. It contains the necessary information. In the “Basic Settings” section, select the connection type. Any Asus model works with all common technologies that are used to access the Internet. If your provider uses non-standard technology, it may be implemented in one of the custom firmwares, which can be downloaded separately.

In the “Setting up a WAN IP address” item, select to automatically obtain an IP address or enter it manually if your provider has provided you with a static IP and it is specified in the contract. In the "Settings" section account» Specify the username and password that are used to connect to the Internet. If the provider provides additional connection data (for example, access is via VPN), indicate them in the special requirements tab.

In the same “Internet” item, on a separate tab, you can configure port forwarding. One of the features of Asus Wi-Fi routers is a large list of preset program settings for port forwarding. You can select a program in the “List of favorite games” item. All this can be done in manual mode, using the “Add/Delete” button in the lower table.

Important! Port forwarding can be useful if some applications are not working correctly. If there are no connection problems, it is recommended not to change these settings.

After debugging the connection, go to the “Local Network” menu. On the “LAN IP” tab you can change the router address. The “DHCP Server” section allows you to set a protocol for automatically assigning IP addresses to all devices. For inexperienced users, it is advisable to leave the DHCP server enabled and, if necessary, set the range of addresses that will be assigned to network devices. At the same time, the specified range should not include the address of the Wi-Fi router itself, otherwise conflicts may arise if this device and one of the computers will be assigned one IP.

When the DHCP server is disabled, it becomes necessary to assign IP addresses manually. In this case, the MAC address is used to identify network devices. You can also set manual addressing only for certain clients by adding them to the table below. This setting will be required for the correct operation of some applications that interact with the local network.

Setting up WiFi on Asus routers

You can change Wi-Fi settings in the “Advanced settings -> Wireless network” menu. On the “General” tab, you can set separate parameters for networks operating in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands (when using a 2-band router). If the device supports only one band - 2.4 GHz, the "Frequency band" drop-down list is not displayed. The “Hide SSID” item allows you to make your network hidden. There are no significant security improvements, since the device broadcasts its MAC address anyway.

Leave the channel mode and width unchanged, and select “Auto” in the channel list. This will allow the router to independently select the least loaded frequencies within the range, in order to avoid interference that may be created wireless routers neighbors.

It is recommended to set the authentication method to "WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK". Encryption using this protocol protects Wi-Fi from unwanted connections and data interception. In the “WPA Pre-Shared Key” field, set the password that will be used to connect to Wi-Fi in the future.

If you want to change additional Wi-Fi settings on your Asus router, go to the “Professional” tab. A useful function in this menu is to turn on the radio module only at a certain time. With its help, you can limit Wi-Fi operation when it is not in use. For example, when installing a device in an office, it may be necessary to turn off the radio module during non-working hours. If you use your router at home, you can set Wi-Fi to turn off at night.

The “Set isolated access point” item allows you to restrict access of connected devices to the local network. After its activation, all devices will be able to access the Internet, but their interaction with each other will become impossible. This setting is most often used in public Wi-Fi networks, to ensure the confidentiality of data stored on clients' devices. During setup home network As a rule, there is no such need.

You can also use a guest network to limit access to local data. Its configuration is done in the “General -> Guest Network” menu. Its operating time can be limited to a certain number of hours and minutes (section “Access time”). After the specified period has expired, the connection will be disconnected automatically. For guest networks, you can set your own encryption settings or leave them open. The SSID is also indicated separately.

Note! On most modern ASUS routers you can create up to four guest networks.

System settings of Asus routers, USB use

You can change your account information in the “Administration -> System” menu. There you can also set the behavior of the WPS button. There are On/Off options to choose from. Wi-Fi" and "Activate WPS". WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) technology allows wireless devices to connect to Wi-Fi without entering a password, within two minutes after pressing a button on the router. If you plan to use it, select the second button behavior option. Otherwise, it is more convenient to choose the first option so as not to go to the router’s control panel every time you are going to turn off Wi-Fi.

If you do not want access to the router settings from another computer, enable the “Allow only specified ip address” option. You can add your IPs to the white list using the “Specified IP address” table.

Setting up an Asus router is a fairly simple process that does not cause any difficulties. However, to avoid problems, you still need to adhere to a certain algorithm. This instruction universal for all routers from this manufacturer.

Knowing how to connect and configure this device gives the user a lot of options. He will be able not only to use the router, but also to enter all the necessary information. This could be changing personal data, setting up the Internet, or the ability to change settings.

Connection and configuration follow a simple scheme:

  1. The user connects the router and then goes into the settings.
  2. ASUS provides quick setup with special features.
  3. If it is impossible to configure through the wizard, you can contact your WAN provider.
  4. Enter personal data, set a password and change your name if necessary.
  5. A change of the pin code.

To configure your router, you will need additional information. The user needs to know what type of connection the provider uses. If he uses PPTP or L2TP, information about personal data will be needed. To get all the necessary data, just contact your provider.

How to quickly connect and configure

Important! There are cases when the network is called differently. Sometimes it is password protected. This is an indicator that another user has already attempted to configure the ASUS. Therefore, it is recommended to reset all settings before proceeding. To do this, you need to press the button located on the back of the device and do not release it for 10-15 seconds. After this time, the indicators will go out and the router will turn on again.

Go to the control panel

After a successful connection, the user needs to open the browser that he usually uses.

  1. In the address bar you need to write the following: 192.168.1.1. If everything is done correctly, the settings will open immediately. The “Welcome to ASUS” window will appear. At the bottom of the screen there will be a “Go” button.

  2. After clicking, you will be prompted to write a password that will help protect your device settings. Experts advise paying close attention to the reliability of the data you enter; the password should be difficult to crack. It is better to write down all the necessary data on a piece of paper so that there are no problems with logging in in the future. Tips “Weak”, “Reliable”, “Very reliable” will pop up in the window. It is recommended to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters in your password, combined with numbers.

  3. Clicking “Next” will bring up the “Wireless Network Settings” window. You must specify a unique network name; you can also use the SSID (wireless network identifier). It is important to fill in the “Network key” field, in which you indicate strong password to connect. It should not duplicate the password set for the router. This data will be needed to identify the user’s wireless network; it is also recommended to write it down on a piece of paper.

  4. You will have to wait for some time, the router must reboot. Now a window will appear with the name that was specified earlier. You need to click on the “Connect” button and enter the password. It is recommended to check the box next to “Connect automatically”.

  5. As soon as the connection is made, you need to return to “Quick Internet setup”, “Router settings” item. All necessary connection information will be displayed there. The user must click Next.

  6. The “Sign In” window will appear. You need to specify the data that was previously specified in the settings. By clicking the “Login” button, the user will successfully complete the process of connecting and setting up the router.

On a note! Often the entire process runs smoothly when the ISP uses an automatic IP address. The device configures everything itself. But L2TP, PPPoE and PPTP involve a longer connection process. There is nothing complicated in the actions, but the user will need to enter a number of data manually.

Setting up a router for other connection types

In this case, after checking the connection, the “Select the type of WAN connection provided by your Internet service provider” window will appear. This indicator will need to be selected manually:

  • PPPoE;
  • PPTR;
  • L2TP.

On this tab you can view the basic settings, WAN IP address settings, WAN DNS settings and change them if necessary. At this stage, the connection and configuration of the ASUS router ends.

Important Settings

These tasks are simple to perform, but no less important. To change the name of the wireless network, you need to:

Important! Once the user changes the password or name, they will need to connect their devices to Wi-Fi again. If problems occur, it is recommended to delete the network and perform all connection steps again.

An important point is to protect your router settings. If you need to enter a new password or replace an old one, you need to:

Now only these specified data will be used for login.

ASUS offers users a range of budget routers that allow them to create a stable Internet connection and set up a wireless network. This time we will figure out how to set up wifi router Asus rt n12 is an inexpensive device that is often used by providers as a standard router.

Preparing the device

The first step is to properly connect the router to the computer. If you have encountered setting up an upvel ur 315bn router or any other network device, then performing this procedure should not cause you any difficulties.

If you are connecting and setting up a router yourself for the first time, be careful - in most cases, incorrect operation of the equipment and the inability to create a connection to the Internet are associated with incorrect installation of the router.

Rotate your device reverse side to yourself. On the back of the case you can see five ports: four are used for connecting via patch cord to network cards; to WAN port ( of blue color) the cable laid by the provider into the room is connected.

Be sure to check your settings network card: all data necessary for the operation of the network must be received automatically by the equipment.

If you already have an active internet connection, disconnect it. When setting up a router, only the local network through which you will configure the router should be running. Otherwise, various errors may appear.

Web interface

The router settings are available at 192.168.1.1. The login credentials will be the classic “admin/admin” pair, unless you or another user has changed the password yourself.

If you cannot log into the router interface using the “admin” password, try resetting it to factory settings by pressing the “Reset” button on the back panel of the device.

When you enter the interface, the Quick Setup Wizard starts. You can use its help, but it is better to specify the Internet connection parameters manually. Therefore, click on the button in the form of a house to get to the main menu of the router’s web interface.

Internet connection

The connection is configured on the “Internet” tab, which can be found in the “Advanced settings” menu.

Get your agreement with the provider in advance - the information specified in it is necessary to create a correct connection.

Let's look at how different types of Internet connections are created. Let's take PPPoE and L2TP as an example.

PPPoE

L2TP

This type of connection is used by Beeline. Its configuration differs only in the presence of the VPN server address, otherwise it is similar to establishing a connection using the PPPoE protocol.
