Of course, the last two functions are no longer so attractive, given that you can do all this without the participation of a local network. Installation instructions

Of course, first we need to download Hamachi. We can do this through the official website of the programby clicking on the big green button "Try it for free":

We need to create a new network. To do this, click on the "Create Networks" button:

In the window that appears, we select the network type "Mesh" (this is important), and then we come up with a name and description for the network. Don't bother too much with this. Just come up with a name that you can remember:

That's it, we have completed the basic network settings, now we need to download the Hamachi program itself. To do this, in the menu on the left, select the item "Networks" -\u003e "My networks". Next, select the "Add client" button:

On the next page, simply click on the "Continue" button, then "Download Now". After completing these steps, the program will start downloading.

After the program has downloaded, run it and follow the instructions of the installation wizard, constantly agreeing with everything. The only point is to check the box "Create a shortcut on the desktop", so as not to lose it later:

Create a connection

It is quite easy to create a connection, as well as in different ways: through a router or cable. The device settings for both methods are quite similar. The difference lies mainly in the connection method: via cable or via Wi-Fi.

Communication via Wi-Fi, which is much more common today, can be much more convenient, but connecting two PCs with a cable will cost less if you have not yet installed a router for some reason.

Connection via cable

The oldest form of communication between two machines. It only needs to connect an RJ45 network cable. The cable must be crossover, although regular straight-through cables can often be used with modern computers. Nevertheless, when buying, it is better to check the type of cable with the seller. When adding the ends of a crossover cable, the colors of the ends of the wires will differ - this is its main difference. Also, the connection requires network cards on both devices, but today they are already installed. One has only to note that if the network card is already busy with an Internet connection, then you will not be able to use it.

Such a connection was just used before in order to play. But someone may be comfortable today, especially if you still have operating system Windows XP, which has difficulty supporting wireless connections.

After connecting the cable itself, you need to know how to set up a local network between two computers:

  • Control Panel, select the item relating to network connections.
  • We select the one we created there, right-click on it, select "Properties"
  • Further, depending on the "Windows": for Windows XP, select the Internet Protocol (TCP / IP), for Windows 7/8/10 - Internet Protocol version 4.

  • Manually enter the IP address: 192.168.xxx.xxx. The last six digits can be entered independently, the main thing is that they do not repeat for different devices.

  • On Windows 7, you will also need to go to the Network and Control Center, there, through the "Settings" item, select "Private" for our network.
  • Then in the Control Center, enable file sharing, network discovery, and disable password protection.

After that, you must also set up sharing. This is done so that PCs can exchange any files. Methods differ on different OS. On WindowsXP:

  1. Section Network connections, go to "Tools", select "Folder Options".
  2. View tab, check the box next to Use simple file sharing.
  3. Next, go to the "System Properties" window: RMB on "My Computer" - select Computer Name.
  4. We click "Change", select "Is a member" - the working group. We come up with a common group name for both PCs.
  5. My computer, right-click on hard drives (for example, Windows (C :)), in the "Access" tab, click on the link, set the sharing permission.

That's it, access to the files of the selected disks is completely open. With Windows 7/8/10 we proceed as follows:

  • Control Panel, then Folder Options.
  • Check the "Use Sharing Wizard" checkbox.
  • The next steps will be the same as for XP.

Connection through a router

This is the most convenient method, since it allows you to connect not only two, but more computers or other devices that support Wi-Fi. You can play on such a connection without long settings.

IP-addresses with such a connection will be set automatically. To use shared files, you will only need to share files, and then add two computers to the same workgroup, as described above.

Now, to transfer files, you just need to enter, using the address bar, the computer name: \\name\. You can also do this through the Network Connections section. It is also worth securing your personal or especially important files so that no one can access them from a neighboring computer. To do this, it is best to specify disks that do not contain information that is important to you. For example, a disk containing data accounts users, it is better not to make it open to everyone, or, using the settings menu for files and folders, restrict access to them: RMB on the desired folder, then select the sharing settings there.

LAN game

So, we managed to connect two devices to the same network without the Internet, let them exchange files. How to start playing on a local network?

For this, as a rule, no additional settings are needed. We just turn on the game and, if it is possible to play on a local connection, select the appropriate item, and then play on the one we have already created.

For different games, the connection to the shared server may vary. Somewhere you will need to enter the IP or PC name. For Minecraft, Counter Strike, for example, you will need to create a server. But as a rule, everything is done quite simply.

Hamachi

This happens quite rarely, but sometimes a game does not allow you to play via the Internet, but it allows you to play on a local network. Do not despair, even if it turned out that your friend lives far away from you.

The Hamachi program allows you to emulate a local connection and thus connect a PC to it via the Internet. To do this, you just need to download the program, register, and then create a new connection, come up with a name for it and, if necessary, a password. After that, you can easily use this network to play the game.

As you can see, connecting computers to a local network is a fairly easy process. It doesn't take much of your time, and you can connect two PCs and then play with your friends, both being away from them and being in the same room with them.

Why do you need a local network?

LAN may be needed for:

  • Data transfer between devices without the participation of external drives (flash drives, disks, etc.);
  • Opening access to the Internet for all network members if it is connected to only one computer;
  • Management of portable devices from different computers. For example, within the office from any iron, you can print on one printer;
  • Organization of voice and video conferences;
  • Network games.

Types of local networks

There are only two of them:

  • peer-to-peer network. All participants have equal rights, that is, they independently decide which files to open access to and which ones not. It is used in cases of combining a small number of PCs.
  • Server based. Actual option when there are more than 10 computers. Increases network performance. The bottom line is that for storing general information, connecting peripheral devices (scanners, printers, etc.), determining routes for sending information and centrally managing the entire network, one machine is allocated - the server - and all the rest are fed to it.

There are also two ways to build a network: with or without wires. Let's consider each separately.

Wired connection

A twisted pair or optical cable is used, which is connected to a PC. Such devices are in any hardware that is no more than 10-15 years old - they are integrated into the motherboard.

Wired bonding provides the most stable and fastest data transfer. In modern versions, the throughput is 100 Mbps and higher through twisted pair. From 10 Gbps over fiber. For this connection, Ethernet technology is most often used.

When the set of computers is large or it is necessary to distribute the Internet from one server, hubs (switches) can be used. They have several connectors for connecting wires. Their functions include relaying the signal entering one port through other interfaces.

Network structure

There are several topologies for connecting computers by wire:

  • Line bus - Serial connection of PCs from one to another.
  • Type "star" - all network members are powered by one server.
  • Ring - the structure of the connection is clear from the name. In this case, server resources are also distributed among all machines, but if one fails, the others will not work.

  • Snowflake is the most flexible topology, because it allows you to connect equipment according to the most convenient principle, usually taking into account its functionality.

Wireless way

This refers to the association by radio waves. The most common option now is this. However, it is also possible to connect via Bluetooth and GPRS. In any case, the speed will be lower than with a wired connection. On average, on Wi-Fi it is 10 Mbps and above.

To create a grid without the participation of wires, it is necessary that the computers have a special module. In modern laptops, it is usually built in, but for PCs, you can buy an external device. You also need a single network gateway (router), to which wired Internet will be connected. And network participants will receive it via radio waves.

How is data transferred?

To organize a local network, it is not enough just to physically connect the machines, you also need to configure it. Their work is controlled by programs. In order for computers to understand each other, a single and understandable language for them is used - a network protocol.

It comes in many forms, but packet protocols are the most widely used. What does it mean? The transmitted data is divided into blocks, which are placed in the packet. It also contains recipient and recipient information. Each computer connects to the network with a certain frequency and checks the passing packets: it takes those that are intended for it.

How does iron understand that this or that packet is addressed to it? Each machine has an IP address that is unique within the same network. It is set during the setup process for Windows or another system that you use.

Hello my dears! Today in the article we will continue building a home media network. But this time, our tasks will be more global. Together with you, we will network devices that are far from each other.

Yes, yes, guys, it became crowded within the walls of one room and therefore the main topic of the article will sound like this - LAN via Hamachi. And do not be afraid of incomprehensible words and names. Everything here is much simpler than it seems.

But so as not to torment you, let's get to the heart of the matter.

So, I’ll tell you right away what was the reason for writing this post.

There were many different photos: against the backdrop of the sights of the city, on the then still calm Maidan, on the bus during the journey, etc. And if you consider that the road is long (about 850 km.) And it’s hard to go “dry”, then it was very cool to look at some faces: 🙂

But at work, you yourself know how it happens, sometimes they distract, and even the boss suddenly bursts into the office with burning eyes. In general, in war as in war. Therefore, the question arose: how can this case be viewed in a more comfortable environment?

Of course, the easiest way is to take and copy photos to a USB flash drive, and then view them at home. But at that time it was not at hand, and I did not want to bother with lengthy file copying. We need some original solution.

And it was found using a little program called Hamachi. It allows you to connect computers via the Internet in such a way as if they were on the same local network. That is, within the same premises or office.

Such a local network through Hamachi is scientifically called a VPN connection (Virtual Private Network - virtual private network). A significant advantage of this type of connection is the fact that all data is transmitted in encrypted form. So no one will know.

Of course, if you have a permanent dedicated IP address, then you can do without this utility. It is enough just on the router and prescribe the necessary settings. But in my case, not everything is so simple - all addresses are dynamic (gray).

You may now think that this is not possible at all. But this is not so, everything is solvable and very simple. See what the author did to implement this idea without special knowledge and complex settings.

So, the first step is to create a virtual local area network between work and home computers using the Hamachi utility. Download it from the link from here. You need to install it on both computers - home and work.

The installation process itself is quite simple, everything is as usual. You just need to uncheck the box in two places, as shown in the screenshot below:

After completion, run the program and click on the "On" button, and then "Create":

Now on one of the computers we do the following simple steps. Click on the item "Create a new network":

In the window that opens, in the "Network ID" field, specify any name of the future network and come up with a password. After that, do not forget to click the "Create" button:

At this step, on the first computer, all settings are completed. Now let's move on to the second. In order for the virtual local area network through Hamachi to work, you need to make the following settings on it.

In the main window of the program, select "Connect to an existing network". Then, in the "Identifier" column, enter the previously invented name. Remember, we already talked about it earlier in the article. We also specify the password and click on "Connect":

If everything is done correctly, then on both computers in the main window of the Hamachi program, the created network will be displayed with the computers included in it. Hooray, comrades:

A green icon next to the name means that there is a connection with the computer. If the circle is gray (the second line in the screenshot), then there is no access to the car. In this case, you need to check the correctness of the settings made again.

Well, that's all, the preparatory work is completed. We proceed directly to our plan - viewing content on a TV. In the framework of the article, we will consider two ways how this can be done.

Option number 1. The easiest and most convenient. With the help of what we already know. With this option, there will be a minimum of settings. Let's start.

In order for the program to see the contents of a remote computer and display it on the TV screen, you need to connect its network drives to your home computer. This is done in the following way.

As you can see, VLAN via Hamachi works great. Thus, any media content can be viewed. I tried to listen to music, it also starts without problems.

The only nuance that was noticed on the author's equipment is that for some reason folders with a large number of files did not open. For example, if there are 20-30 songs in the catalog, access is no problem. If 100-120, you get an error when opening.

Well, in general, the system works without problems. Everything is limited only by the speed of the Internet. By the way, the author, the connection using the good ancient ADSL technology, gives as much as 512 Kbps for return. So don't overclock too much.

Option number 2. With help . In principle, the settings are also simple, everything is done quite quickly. Let's start.

So, on all computers that we want to network, this program must be installed. Now let's make one of the computers the main one. He will do the summary processing. That is, collect information about content on other machines.

To do this, launch the Twonky Server program and follow the path "Settings - Summary Processing". Then check the box "Enable Pivot Processing":

Now we make simple settings on other computers that we want to include in the media network. In the case of the author of the article, this is one computer at work.

We start the server on it and in its settings in the "Sharing - Pivot Servers" section, check the box next to the desired server:

In my case, for some reason, the checkbox was not set, but access still worked. Well, that's all. Local media network via Hamachi with Twonky Server application is ready to use. Let's see what happened.

To do this, open the server and select the desired section. In our case, this is "photo":

At this step, in the "My Library" section, we find remote server with the name of the computer, and in the "Media receivers" section, we indicate our "smart" TV:

The first time you start viewing in this way, a message may appear on the TV about allowing the application to access the TV set, answer in the affirmative.

The only drawback when working with Twonky Server is the fact that you need to start media files from a computer, since the network folder is not displayed on the TV itself.

Local network between computers

In order to combine several computers into a local network, a special device is used - switch (switch).

The switch has several connectors - ports, to which, using a special cable twisted pair UTP-5e connects computers or other devices. The twisted pair is crimped on both sides with special RJ-45 connectors. This wiring technology is called ethernet.

Internet connection via local network

There is a concept local computer network LAN, it is internal, we discussed how to create it above. Also exists global computer network WAN, it is external.

Let's look at how to connect devices connected to our local network to the global Internet. So that from each individual device of ours (desktop computer, laptop, network media player, TV) we can have access through our Internet provider to the global Internet.

For this, a special device is used - router (router).

The router has a separate WAN port to which a twisted pair cable from an ISP is connected. Through this port, our local network is connected to the global Internet.

Also, depending on the model, the router has several LAN ports for connecting LAN devices. Usually these are four or more ports.

In the general case, one router is enough to create a local network and organize its access to the Internet. If there are not enough ports to connect devices on the internal LAN, then you must additionally use a switch.

In the figure below, I just showed the option when some of the devices are connected through a router, and some through a switch.

The cable from the ISP is connected to the WAN port of the router. Our router has four ports for connecting four LAN devices.

We want to connect:

Three computers; - network drive NAS; - TV with Internet connection; - perhaps in the future something else.

We connect a monoblock computer and a network drive to the LAN ports of the router, leave one port as a reserve for the future, and connect the remaining free port with a twisted pair cable to a free switch port.

We connect a stationary computer, laptop and TV to the free ports of the switch.

If you need to connect several more devices to the local network, but there are not enough free ports on the switch, add another switch and connect these devices to it. This option can be useful when organizing a local computer network in a cottage, when a separate switch can be installed on each floor.

I want to note that in our example, you can purchase a router for more ports and connect all devices on the local network to it. Then you don't need a switch.

Such a configuration using a router will allow each device connected to the local network to access the Internet via one channel from the Internet provider.

Wireless LAN over Wi-Fi

Above, we examined the topology of building a wired local area network. But today, more and more devices appear, with the ability to connect to the network via wireless technology WiFi. First of all, these are tablets and smartphones. How to create a local network via Wi-Fi? To do this, you need to connect a special device to a free port of our router or switch using a compressed twisted pair - wifi hotspot.

It will allow you to exchange information between all devices connected to the local network both via wired Ethernet technology and wireless Wi-Fi. In addition, we get the opportunity to access the Internet from our tablets and smartphones.

If Wi-Fi coverage is not enough, you can expand it by adding another access point.

One of the computers connects to the Internet, the second computer connects to the first. The main disadvantage in this case is that in order to access the network of the second computer, it is necessary that the first computer is also on the network. And also, if your Internet connection goes through a network card, then you need an additional network card to connect the second computer to the first one, because. the built-in network card is already busy (it accepts the Internet).

To connect two computers to each other and to the Internet via a Network Bridge, you will need:

1. Special cable (twisted pair) and possibly an additional network card.

Twisted pair can be obtained from radio markets or specialized stores. It is made independently, using a special tool called "crimping" and based on the required length of the cable itself. The pinout can be found on the internet. Or you can ask to compress the "vituha" directly on the radio market (tell the seller what you need to compress for the connection type "via network cards" or "comp-comp", there is also a "comp-switch") or buy a ready-made cable (if any), but it may be short. There is no factory assembly of such a cable, only a "comp-switch" is on sale, you can buy it, but then one end of it is cut and crimped.

A twisted pair is an 8-core cable (eg UTP-5) with RJ-45 connectors. The ends of the cables are crimped special. tool (special pliers) into the connectors in accordance with the colors of the ends. The order of crimping the network cable is as follows: BO-O-BZ-S-BS-Z-BK-K at both ends to connect to the hub. To connect a computer to a computer, one of the sides should be: BZ-Z-BO-S-BS-O-BK-K, where O is orange, Z is green, C is blue, K is brown, BO is white-orange, etc. etc. (do not go into too much detail, but give the cable to knowledgeable people for crimping).

Computers must be in the same workgroup, in the same address range, and with different network names. The setting of these parameters is shown in the graphic diagram:



In this case, it is also desirable to set the IP addresses and the subnet mask manually (the subnet mask is generated automatically when the IP address is specified). IP addresses can be selected in the range 192.168.0.xxx. At the same time, on all computers on the local network, the IP address must necessarily begin with "192.168.0.xxx", and the last three digits (xxx) must be different (otherwise there will be a conflict, since this is tantamount to two different houses having the same same address) and be in the range 0 - 255. The IP address setting is shown in the graphical diagram:



2.2. Wizard setup

To do this, go to "Control Panel" -> "Network Setup Wizard", and follow the instructions of the wizard.

Can also be combined manual setting network and setup using the wizard, for example, after setting up the network using the wizard, specify the IP address.

After all this, you can give access (share) some folders in the folder properties, in the "Access" tab. Shared folders can be seen by going to "My Computer" and in the "List of typical tasks" select "Network Neighborhood". To do this, go to Start - Control Panel - Printers and Faxes. We find the printer connected to this PC, right-click on it and select "Sharing ..." in the context menu. After that, this printer will automatically be detected on other PCs connected to this local network.

3.2. Using a Shared Printer on a LAN
On other PCs, go to Start - Control Panel - Printers and Faxes. Click on "Install Printer", and then follow the instructions of the printer installation wizard.

We connect 3 PCs through network cards by the type of Network Bridge

It is not necessary to have a router or a switch to connect 3 PCs, it is enough to buy one more network card.
This option is cheaper than a switch, because. a switch is 3 times more expensive than a network card. To connect 3 computers, you need to select one of them and make it the master, the other two slaves. You need to put 2 network cards on the host computer. Then connect with 2 other twisted pair and create a Network Bridge. Then share the Internet and local folders, while the slave computer must be constantly turned on and connected to the Internet.

We connect 3 or more computers (up to 20 PCs) through an external hub (switch or network hub)

How to connect 3 or more computers to each other and to the Internet, provided that you need to distribute the same speed to each?


The simplest solution is to buy a switch (Hab), for 5 or more ports, N cables (taking into account the distance of each from the supposed location of the switch to each computer) with a comp-switch crimp (this was already mentioned above), where N is the number computers. After acquiring the necessary, you need to connect the computers to the switch. After that, we set up computers in the same way as with a connection between two computers.

We connect 3 or more computers (up to 6 PCs) through an internal hub (Hub)

This is due to the extra load on the processor when transmitting / receiving data, since there is a lot of processing, for example, when a movie is downloaded (resources are spent on creating packets where data is read, and parsing packets where data is received). All this leads to a slowdown in the performance of both computers: the one who reads and most of all the one where the data is read. If there is a center. server, then it is engaged in this business, and not client computers. That is why they put the central server. The switch takes care of some of the processing, but this is not enough with a large number of PCs connected to the network.

But it is better, of course, to use a server with a smaller number of computers, while there will be no braking, but in this case, you need to spend extra money on a server, i.e. to another PC. In addition, the server must be served by someone, for this there is such a position as "System Administrator". In general, if there is no money for an additional computer, you can run up to 20 computers through a switch.

The LAN server (Fig. 1.1) is a server that provides services to Intranet users. Don't confuse "Intranet" with "Internet". An Intranet is an internal corporate network, usually without access to the Internet.

Imagine a small office network. If you are imaginative, you can even imagine a large local area network located in a multi-story building. In such a network, the server can perform a variety of functions, such as being a print server or a file server. Normally, on internal networks, servers perform only these functions. Depending on the type of activity of the organization in which the server is installed, it is quite often used as a database server.

For the database server and the file server, it is generally desirable to allocate one computer each, because if the load on the database server is quite large, and this is the case in most cases, then this will reduce the performance of the file server, and vice versa. If server performance is low, then, as always, the user suffers. In turn, the "suffering" of users will be reflected in no one else but you - the administrator.

On fig. 1.1 shows a small local network without Internet access. All workstations and the server itself are connected to the central device of the network - the hub. Instead of a hub, you can use (and preferably use) a switch (switch). Unlike a switch, a hub does not know which port a particular computer is connected to, and when one of the computers transmits a data packet, the hub repeats it to all its ports. Each computer on the network receives this packet and checks for the presence of its IP address in its header. If the destination IP address does not match the IP address of the computer that received the packet, then the packet is simply ignored. The switch, on the other hand, forwards the packet only to the port to which the destination is connected. Due to this, in addition to improving security, the load on the network is reduced. This is how data packets are delivered from source to destination.

In addition to a hub or switch, in most cases no other network equipment is needed, with the exception of network cards. In the case of a long network, repeaters are used, which, passing the signal through themselves, amplify it. At its core, a repeater is a simple hub. The hub, minus some service functions, is a multiport repeater.

The choice of a network adapter and other "hardware" for the server is described in clause 7.6 "A Few Words Before Setting Up the Server". Here you need to say a few words about the choice of the switch. Previously, the main stumbling block for the use of switches was their high cost. Now you can buy quite productive switches for relatively little money. For a home or small office, the LUCENT CAJUN P115G switch can be recommended. It has 24 10/100Mbps ports as well as 1 100FX fiber optic port. According to the latest data, its cost is about 230 US dollars.

More expensive and more productive option for 48 ports 10/100 Mbit LUCENT-CAJUN P334T. This switch has an internal 8Gb bus as well as a modular design that allows you to install additional modules. The cost of the R334T model is about $900. Installing additional 100FX fiber optic ports will increase the cost by approximately $150-250 depending on the number of ports.

Start creating such a network by choosing a server computer. It must be powerful enough to handle the flow of information passing through it to the rest of the computers or laptops. Another important requirement is the presence of a second network adapter.

Connect an Internet connection cable to the selected computer. Set up Internet access for this device.

Purchase a network hub (switch). It is necessary in order to ensure the connection of other computers or laptops with a computer- server.

Now you need to set up the host computer. In the Control Panel, open the Network and Connections folder internet". Right-click on the "external" adapter icon to open the drop-down menu. The DCHP protocol running on the host computer automatically assigns network addresses to computers on the local network. The inconvenience will be that net will be disabled when the server is turned off. To avoid this, you can manually assign static IP addresses to client computers. Go to the "Control Panel" and open the network connections icon. Right-click on the "Local Area Connection" icon to open the context menu and select the "Properties" option.

In the "Components" section, check the "Internet Protocol (TCP / IP)" item and activate "Properties". If you decide to set IP addresses manually, select "Use the following IP address". You can use the address range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254. The address must be unique for each computer on the network. Set the subnet mask value to 255.255.255.0. In the Default Gateway field, enter the network address of the server 192.168.1.1.

Enter 192.168.1.1 for "Use the following DNS addresses". Click "Advanced" and go to the DNS tab. In the Connection DNS Suffix field, enter MSHOME.NET. Check the "Register this connection's addresses" checkbox.

Launch the Internet Explorer browser and go to the "Tools" menu. Select "Internet Options" and go to the "Connections" tab. Click "Install", then "Next" to continue. Check "Connect to the Internet" and click "Next". Select "Set up a connection manually" and command "Next" to continue.
