A stylish entry-level gadget is the LG Leon. Reviews about this device, its hardware and software specifications are the subject of this article. Well, based on its strengths and weaknesses, recommendations regarding its acquisition will be given.

Who is this gadget for?

The price, hardware and software components of this phone clearly indicate that it belongs to entry-level solutions or, as they are also called, budget class. It doesn’t have any special feature, for example, in the form of a curved display. But there is a full set of the most popular functions today. The design of this device is typical for a series of mobile phones from this manufacturer for this year. The most interesting color option for the case is the LG Leon H324 Titan. Reviews highlight it as the most striking and unusual.

Device delivery set

An entry-level device initially cannot boast of good equipment. It includes a minimum set of components, which only ensures the minimum level of device performance, and there is absolutely nothing superfluous in it. And the equipment for this gadget is as follows:

  • Actually the device itself with the battery installed.
  • Standard charger with USB output port.
  • Universal interface cord for charging the battery or synchronizing with a PC.
  • Guide to using the device.

As noted earlier, the body of this gadget can be of three colors: gold, titanium and white. They all pick up dirt easily. And it’s not particularly difficult to damage them; the LG Leon H324 Titan especially stands out in this regard. Reviews certainly confirm this. Therefore, to eliminate this kind of problem, you must immediately after purchase purchase a protective film and stick it together with the case. Also, the owner of such a device needs to additionally purchase an external drive. Well, a stereo headset would also be useful. Without it, the radio will not work.

Appearance

Most of the front panel of this gadget is occupied by a 4.5-inch display. Above it there is a speaker, touch elements and for video calls. Below the display there is a plastic strip with the manufacturer's logo. But the control panel has been moved to the bottom of the screen and consists of 4 buttons: in addition to the three standard ones, there is also an additional one, which allows you to quickly switch between active SIM cards. There is an audio port on the top edge of the smartphone, and MicroUSB on the bottom. On the back cover there are volume control and lock buttons. There is also a peephole for the main camera and an LED backlight for it. As noted earlier, there are three color options for this device: white, titanium and gold. Users highlight the LG Leon H324 Titan smartphone. Reviews indicate its unusual color. Well, the “Gold” version is very much reminiscent of last year’s “Apple” gadget in color.

CPU

A reliable and energy-efficient processor is installed in the LG Leon. Reviews highlight its low level of performance. You can't expect anything more from a CPU introduced two years ago. All this is MT6582 from MediaTek. It includes 4 computing modules of the “A7” architecture. When solving the most complex problems, the frequency of each of them can be increased to 1.3 GHz. This is quite enough to solve most tasks: reading books, listening to music and radio, playing videos, navigating, and so on. It can handle even the simplest games without any problems. But the latest generation of 3D games with the most serious requirements for the hardware of a smartphone will not run on this device: there is not enough computing power on the CPU.

Display and video accelerator

Of course, the screen is one of the main advantages that the LG Leon smartphone can boast of compared to its competitors. Reviews highlight its excellent quality. The display matrix is made using True IPS technology. Accordingly, color rendering, viewing angles and energy efficiency do not cause any complaints. Another advantage of the screen is the absence of an air gap between the touch surface of the front panel and the screen matrix. The display resolution in this case is 854x480. The pixel density is 220 ppi, making it quite difficult to distinguish an individual pixel. That is, the image on the display is quite high quality. To process graphic information, this device is equipped with a Mali-400MP2 graphics card. Of course, it can no longer boast of high performance, but it is quite enough to offload the central processor, which, because of this, is engaged only in program calculations and is not “distracted” by graphic information.

Cameras

The quality of photos and videos of the main camera can be called acceptable. It has a 5 megapixel sensor. There is also an autofocus system and an LED flash. Accordingly, her photographs come out of good quality. But the front camera in this device is really modest. It has a sensor of only 0.3 megapixels. This is enough to make video calls. But you can’t expect anything more from her.

Memory

The memory subsystem in the LG Leon raises the most questions. Reviews indicate a lack of RAM. There is only 768 MB of it here. Moreover, about 500 MB of them are occupied by system processes. The user can only count on 268 MB. For one or two simple applications this will be enough. Well, if you try to run more programs, the phone will slow down a lot. A definite solution to the lack of RAM may be to install a special program to clean it regularly. But it would still be better if the gadget had 1 GB. The capacity of the built-in storage is 4 GB. About half of them are filled with system software. The remaining volume is clearly not enough for comfortable work. Therefore, the owner of a “smart” smartphone cannot do without an external flash drive. Its capacity in this case can reach 32 GB.

Autonomy

The capacity of the included battery in this gadget is 1900 mAh. Taking into account the device's display diagonal of 4.5 inches, a fairly energy-efficient processor and the inability to run resource-intensive applications, the given battery capacity is enough for 2 days of battery life at an average level of load on the device. With a more intensive level of use of a smart phone, the given value will be enough for a day. If you reduce the load on the gadget, you can get three days of battery life. These are very modest figures today. An external additional battery may be a definite solution to this problem, but it will have to be purchased separately for an additional fee. This is a significant disadvantage, but in this case this gadget will not let you down under any circumstances.

Interface kit

The LG Leon phone is equipped with a typical list of interfaces. Reviews highlight the following:

  • Wi-Fi is the main way to receive and send information on the Internet.
  • Bluetooth is an ideal means of connecting wireless headphones and exchanging information with other smartphones.
  • GPS allows you to easily turn this smart phone into a navigator.
  • Full support for all currently existing mobile networks, including 4G.
  • Wired interfaces are represented by MicroUSB and 3.5 mm Audio Jack ports.

Software

One of the most recent versions, numbered 5.0, of the Android operating system was installed on the LG Leon H324 smartphone. Reviews highlight this plus. But this raises a rather significant problem: outdated hardware and new system software are not compatible. It is impossible to unlock the full potential of the latest version of Android on such a 32-bit chip. And the amount of RAM of 768 MB leads to the fact that even such simple applications as “Phone Book” and “SMS” “slow down” on this device. Of course, a certain optimization of the software code on this device has been performed, but this is clearly not enough to solve the problem with the lack of hardware resources. "MT6582" was perfect for version 4.4, but for 5.0 it is no longer enough. And this is already a miscalculation of Korean engineers.

How much can you buy it for now?

Today, the price of a smartphone at $110 indicates that the cost of this device is significantly overestimated. A device with similar or even better hardware parameters, but from a less famous brand, is priced at $80. For example, the Dodgee X5 boasts almost the same parameters (the difference in the amount of RAM is 1 GB versus 768 MB and the presence of an air gap between the sensor and the screen), but at the same time it costs $30 less. This difference is critical for a budget-class smartphone; a potential buyer of such a device will certainly not overpay an additional 30 dollars for the brand.

LG decided to start 2015 by updating its line of smartphones in the entry- and mid-price segment. Last year's models are being replaced by smartphones with curved screens LG Spirit and Magna and a simple budget phone Leon. We are already with the eldest of the new products, LG Magna, and today it is the turn of the most inexpensive model.

Design and usability

Compared to Magna and Spirit, LG Leon turned out to be the roundest. The model has rounded body contours and a convex lid. The case material, as usual, is plastic to look like metal.

The case thickness of 10.9 mm hints that this is an inexpensive model. The overall body dimensions are acceptable - 129.9 by 64.9 mm, the smartphone feels relatively compact, but the 4.5-inch screen has wide frames.

The black front panel is refreshed by a thin strip of plastic matching the color of the lid; above it is the usual manufacturer logo, screen, speaker and a set of sensors. The interface connector and the main microphone are located at the bottom, at the top end there is a headset jack and a second microphone for noise reduction.

The control keys are traditionally located on the back under the camera lens, but this time they are designed as part of the cover, without which you will not be able to turn on the smartphone. Without removing the battery, you can only install a memory card, and the two MicroSIM slots are located under the battery.

The build quality of the LG Leon is at the usual high level, all parts fit tightly together, there are no creaks or play. Since the model is compact, anyone can easily reach the top edge of the screen. The control buttons also turned out to be convenient. The volume keys are made of smooth plastic, they are slightly sunken and the finger fits perfectly into the recess. The power button, on the contrary, protrudes slightly – you won’t get confused.

Like the older models, there are three body colors to choose from: titanium, white and gold.

Display

LG Leon received a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels. The screen brightness can only be changed manually; there is no light sensor, as in most models from the manufacturer. The brightness adjustment range is from 6 to 256 cd/m2, the measured contrast is 1 in 805.

The quality of factory calibration is mediocre, but for relatively budget models this does not play a big role. Although the model is positioned as one of the most affordable in the line, it has a screen without an air gap, so the picture looks nice, at least there are noticeable positive changes compared to last year’s budget models. As strange as it may sound, from a color rendering point of view, I like the Leon’s screen more than the Magna’s display.

Another thing is that the screen also has disadvantages. The maximum brightness of the backlight is low, so on a sunny day you will have to peer a little at the screen and shield your hand from the bright sun. The oleophobic coating also did not appear, so fingerprints on the glass will be the eternal companions of the LG Leon buyer.

Hardware platform

After using Qualcomm Snapdragon 200/400, LG decided to take a closer look at MediaTek products. The first sign was , and today all new products use such chipsets. In the case of LG Leon, the manufacturer did not experiment and chose a time-tested solution - MediaTek MT6582 (4 Cortex-A7 cores, Mali-400 GPU). The amount of RAM is 768 MB, built-in memory is 4 GB plus a slot for memory cards.

Similar to Magna and Spirit, LG Leon runs Android 5.0.1 Lollipop with LG's proprietary UX interface. It is extremely interesting that the overall operating speed of the new product is better than that of its older brothers Magna and Spirit. Most likely, this is due to better optimization of the firmware for a specific model, which once again confirms the crudeness of the first versions of Android Lollipop. Overall, the Leon performs acceptably and is definitely faster than the LG Magna.

We did not notice any problems with the stability of Wi-Fi or GPS.

Telephone functionality is implemented at the usual level. Two SIM cards operate on the basis of one radio module, and a special on-screen key is allocated to switch between cards.

The smartphone has loud speakers and a noticeable vibration alert, so it will be difficult to miss a call or not hear the interlocutor even in noisy conditions.

Working hours

The removable battery of the review hero has a capacity of 1900 mAh, which is enough for two days of work under average load, including constant data synchronization, communication in instant messengers and social networks. In terms of operating time, Leon does not present any surprises - its battery life corresponds to a good average level for similar devices.

Cameras

LG Leon received two cameras. The main one has a resolution of 5 megapixels, it is equipped with autofocus and flash, the maximum video resolution is FullHD. Front camera with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels.

The quality of the main camera is usual for inexpensive smartphones. It will be enough to photograph a static scene as a keepsake, when the presence of the photo itself is more important, and not its quality. The camera is also suitable for everyday use, for example, if there is a need to photograph an advertisement or other text.

The front camera, even despite the presence of special selfie shooting modes, is present in the smartphone purely nominally - from a module with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels you should not expect anything more than a portrait that you will look like.

Results

LG Leon looks like an improved budget phone from 2013/2014. It’s easy to imagine that the company took a classic, inexpensive device for $100, replaced the chipset with a more powerful one, added a little RAM and a better screen. From this point of view, we have a rather successful device, the traditional bonus of which is a high-quality body, normal battery life and good speakers - this is what smartphones of large brands often distinguish.

In terms of cost, Leon turns out to be less attractive, because its $140 turns into 3299 recommended hryvnia. The model finds itself at the very beginning of the middle price range, where users pay more attention to characteristics and less to the brand. If you are simply choosing a smartphone for making calls from a well-known company, then the LG Leon may be suitable for you; it will be more interesting than some offers from Samsung or HTC, but if you are going to use the smartphone for its intended purpose, installing programs, then it is better to choose a more productive option for the same money .

Introduction

The South Korean giant LG literally “stunned” users all over the world with new smartphones, among which the curved Spirit and Magna models stand out. We will review the latter in the very near future, but in this material we will look at the budget model Leon, which was released simultaneously with Magna and Spirit. Thus, the South Koreans are trying to cover all sectors of the market, which is quite reasonable.

Appearance

The body shape of the LG Leon may seem curved, but this impression is made due to the slightly “humpbacked” rear part, where the main camera and the original control element are located. The edges of the body are rounded. The material used is plastic, which can easily be mistaken for metal in black color. There are also other color options: silky white or shining gold. Sounds and looks beautiful. It would be foolish to expect a slim body from a budget model, so the Leon ended up with the following dimensions: 64.9 x 129.9 x 10.9 mm. That is, by today's standards, this is a fairly well-fed smartphone, although not too heavy (135 g). The front panel houses the front camera, screen, speaker, sensors and a light panel at the bottom, adding variety to the design. The reverse side is equipped with a rear camera, LED flash and LG's proprietary control button. Under the back cover there is a battery, as well as slots for installing two MicroSIM-type SIM cards and one memory card. The USB connector and microphone are located at the bottom end. The top of the case is occupied by an audio jack and a microphone for noise reduction.

Equipment

The delivery set is usual: the smartphone itself, charger and paper documentation.

Screen

The display of the new product uses In-Cell Touch technology, which makes it possible to reduce the thickness of the display. In addition to being thin, this provides instant touch response as well as improved image quality. The display itself has a diagonal size of 4.5 inches. The resolution is 854 x 480 (FWVGA) with a pixel density of 220 ppi. The IPS matrix provides wide viewing angles and bright, rich color reproduction. True, the model does not have as much brightness reserve as we would like, which is why the screen will glare a little in the bright sun. There is no oleophobic coating here, so fingerprints on the screen are inevitable for Leon.

Camera

Leon has a modest VGA front camera, but with its own twist. The fact is that LG engineers equipped it with... a flash! However, not mechanical, but “virtual” - the display acted as a source of bright light. Very original and, admittedly, effective - pictures with such a “virtual” flash turn out clear and bright. The main camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels and is equipped with autofocus and LED flash. The maximum resolution for video recording can reach FullHD. Let's note the possibility of shooting with one touch and by hand gesture. In the latter case, a person squeezes his palm and after three seconds receives a photograph without touching the smartphone’s control buttons. The distance from which the camera recognizes gestures has been increased in Leon to 1.5 m.

Sound

The model is equipped with a standard audio jack for connecting a headset and is capable of playing audio in MP3, OGG, AAC, MID, AMR, FLAC and WAV formats. Built-in FM radio. Voice communication is quite at the level of world standards - the interlocutors hear each other clearly, the speakers do not “wheeze”.

Performance

The hero of our review has a quad-core processor with a clock frequency of 1.3 GHz. Specifically, the “Chinese” MediaTek MT6582 (4 Cortex-A7 cores) with a Mali-400 graphics core. It's nice to note that the Leon has 768 MB of RAM, not 512 MB. Still, even such an increase in RAM has a positive effect on the overall performance of the smartphone. The built-in memory is only 4 gigabytes, but it can be increased using a memory card with a capacity of up to 32 GB. In general, Leon is suitable for everyday tasks, as well as for running 3D games that are not too resource-demanding.

Software and autonomy

A striking sign of the times for Leon is the latest Google Android 5.0.1 (Lollipop) operating system with the proprietary LG UX interface. In addition to purely “cosmetic” changes in Lollipop, the HD Voice function, a new smartphone protection system and (finally!) implementation of work with two SIM cards have appeared. Previously, the vendor independently solved the problem of implementing an Android device (smartphone or tablet) with two SIM cards. And Leon just supports working with two SIM cards. As for HD Voice, this option expands the frequency range of the sound during a call, improving the quality of voice transmission. The Device Protection function blocks the device if it is lost or stolen until the owner is verified in the Google system and removes the lock.
If Leon's OS is in perfect order, then the battery capacity causes some skepticism. The model's removable battery capacity is only 1900 mAh. However, with an average load (calls, periodic access to the Internet and photography), the smartphone should be enough for 1.5-2 days of battery life.

Communication capabilities

Leon supports dual SIM cards, as we already mentioned above. Two SIM cards operate on the basis of one radio module. There is a special softkey to switch between them. A WiFi module is provided for access to the Internet, and Bluetooth 4.1 is provided for data exchange between nearby devices. Wi-Fi Direct available. By the way, Lollipop now has a quick selection of a WiFi network or Bluetooth device to connect from the “curtain” of quick settings. You can also hide the “Access Point” icon after activation. To work with two SIM cards, Lollipop provides an interesting feature - setting your own colors for contacts associated with a particular network. By the way, the smartphone works in 2G (900/1800) and 3G (900/2100, HSPA+ 21 Mbit/s) networks. The Chinese MediaTek chipset only supports GPS (A-GPS), which is a little sad, because the domestic GLONASS satellite navigation system will not be available to Leon owners.

conclusions

LG Leon is a prominent representative of the new generation of budget smartphones. As progress moves forward, inexpensive models must also keep up with the times. That's why we see the Leon running the latest Android 5.0.1 Lollipop operating system, which comes with notable improvements including dual-SIM support and device security. The hardware component of the model is quite consistent with its budget - a productive quad-core chipset with 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory, which is expandable with a memory card. We note the excellent 4.5″ display of the new product with In-Cell Touch IPS technology, support for two SIM cards and such features as gesture and one-touch shooting, activation using a unique Knock Code combination, as well as the “Smart Keyboard” function.

P.S. LG Leon is sold in the Svyaznoy store for 7,990 rubles, and if you use the Yandex-Market service, you can find it for 500 rubles cheaper.
