Removable

It has already been repeatedly mentioned on the hub how much the Chinese smartphone market has stepped forward. Today I will tell you about another device from China – Jiayu G2. This is the only smartphone with a 4-inch screen diagonal, 1 GB of RAM and costing up to $200.

  • MT6577 processor running at 1GHz
  • 1 GB RAM + 4 GB internal memory
  • 2 active SIM cards (in standby mode, of course), one of which can work in 3G networks.
  • IPS screen, 4", 480x800 pixels, 16.7 million colors, touch, capacitive, multi-touch support
  • 2 cameras: rear 8 MP, auto-focus and front 0.3 MP
  • 2050 mAh battery
  • Operating system Android ICS 4.0.3
  • Sensors: lighting, proximity, gyroscope, accelerometer and compass
  • Communications: GPS, Wi-Fi(n), BT, FM
  • Dimensions: 124 × 63 × 10.6 (mm)
  • Weight: 140 g (with standard battery)
The device is sold in various versions; in the minimum configuration, its cost starts at $160. An excellent price tag for such characteristics for a smartphone with a 4-inch screen diagonal - this is exactly the size that I consider ideal.

Delivery, packaging, equipment

Who cares, but I’ve been lucky with the mail lately. The device arrived from the Middle Kingdom in 2 weeks, the usual China Post. Moreover, over the past 2 months, 60% of parcels from China were invested within this period.

The smartphone comes in a plastic box, similar to the ones in which I etch printed circuit boards, wrapped in thick paper. To be honest, I have never seen this before, but on the other hand, I must note that in a plastic package the device has a better chance of “staying alive.”

Let's look at the package:

I ordered the maximum: 2 batteries with a capacity of 2050 mAh, a power supply with an adapter, an external charger, a headset, a film for the screen, a case and various documentation. Now let's talk about everything in order.

The set includes 2 batteries, which is a definite plus in cases when you forgot to charge your phone overnight. They weigh decently, so there is no doubt about the real capacity.

The 500mA power supply was disappointing considering the battery capacity was so large. The phone's battery charging time is 4 hours, and when using an external charger it increases to 7 hours. They could have put it at least on 1A, but, again, look at the price.

It was a sin not to disassemble the power supply unit. Everything inside turned out to be at a decent level. They tried to wash off the soldering more or less and the flux.

I was pleased with the external charger, it especially helped during testing of the device, but when using it, the battery takes longer to charge than in a phone.

Also included in the package was an ejection headset and documentation in Chinese.

The last thing I want to talk about is protective equipment. No, they didn’t give me condoms, but they did include a good case and protective film. By the way, this silicone-plastic case has already saved the device from death twice. The first is when falling from one meter onto a wooden floor, flat, with the display down. The second case was falling edge-on onto a concrete floor from a meter high. The photo does not quite correctly convey the appearance of the phone with the case - in fact, it protrudes above the screen.

The equipment is good, but the terrible headset, weak power supply and spartan packaging spoil the impression a little.

Appearance and ergonomics

The front panel contains a screen, two touchscreens (without backlighting they are practically invisible) and one hardware button. The perimeter of the case is edged with glossy black plastic.

Above the screen there is an earpiece, a front camera, two sensors and an alert LED. On the top edge there is a headphone jack and a power button.

On the bottom there is a MicroUSB connector, a microphone hole and a slot with which you can remove the back cover. A little higher, already on the back of the phone, there is an external speaker and brief information about the device.

On the left is a volume rocker, without a separator or any identification marks. Despite its unpretentiousness, it has a clear tactile response, which makes it possible to use it with the bumper on.

On the back is the company logo, camera and flash LED, unfortunately - only one.

The back cover is made of flexible plastic with soft-touch coating, which prevents the device from slipping out of your hands. The cover is durable and fits tightly to the phone. In addition to black, there are also lids in white, orange, yellow, green and blue, but they are glossy.

It is secured using 12 plastic latches around the entire perimeter of the smartphone.

In general, the appearance gives me only positive emotions. A brutal block, with high-quality assembly and, accordingly, without the slightest backlash or squeaks.

Hardware platform

Jiayu G2 is built on the basis of the already proven MTK6577 processor, which includes two Cortex-A9 processor cores, each with a clock frequency of 1 GHz, a PowerVR SGX531 graphics core, 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of flash storage (2.5 GB available to the user) . All this allows the smartphone to easily cope with viewing and recording HD videos, 3D games and other resource-intensive applications.

It is worth noting that those same 2.5 GB are reserved for the internal memory of the smartphone and for its full operation you will have to purchase a microSD memory card. For example, your camera will not work (save pictures) if there is no memory card installed in the slot.

AnTuTu and Quadrant:

Sensors and multi-touch:

The set of all kinds of sensors cannot but rejoice. There is even a compass, so now you definitely won’t get lost. :)

GPS:

I was pleased with the performance of this module. The first screenshot was taken outdoors, the second indoors, near the window. As you can see, the phone can easily be used as a navigator.

Autonomy. Antutu Tester:

There are 458 parrots in total. I still didn’t understand what caused such a low result and continued to test the autonomy in real operating conditions. Its results are shown in the table:

Mode Time, minutes
3D games 280
Playing 480p videos from YouTube 510
Playing 720p videos from YouTube 395
As for daily use, with my typical operating scheme the device barely survives until the end of the second day. My typical usage pattern looks like this: take it off the charger in the morning and go to school. All this time, i.e. 2G Internet works for 8 hours, Wi-Fi is always available at home. Over the course of the whole day, I get about an hour of browsing, plus the same amount of reading and listening to music. Calls take approximately 10-15 minutes. Push notifications from VK, Twitter and Gmail are also included.

Considering the ratio of screen diagonal and battery capacity is not the best indicators, I think the fault lies in poor firmware optimization. Although perhaps I have too many background tasks running, because according to information from various forums, for some people the device lasts 4-5 days.

Internals and maintainability

Let's disassemble the device. We will inspect the internals and test maintainability.
Remove the back cover by prying it by the notch on the bottom end.

We unscrew the four bolts around the perimeter of the smartphone. We don't touch the fifth one yet.

Armed with a mediator, we snap off the plastic fasteners.

Subsequently, the board and its rear panel appear before us:

On the back panel there are antenna contacts, a speaker and a window for the camera.

You can take a closer look at the motherboard in the following photo:

Let's continue the disassembly. We fold back the two cables marked with a green rectangle, simply by lifting them a little with the edge of a flat-head screwdriver, they come off easily.

Next, we disconnect the screen cable by first removing the Velcro from it and lifting the bar that holds it in the connector.

In the lower right corner, disconnect the coaxial cable.

Unscrew the four screws around the perimeter of the board.

Carefully lift and remove the board. Please note that there is another connector under the board, which also needs to be carefully disconnected.

Removing the system board:

The other side of it:

Front camera, RGB LED and various sensors nearby:

Putting it back together in reverse order. In general, the device is easy to disassemble/assemble; there are no complaints about soldering or components. Everything is done with high quality.

Display

Jiayu G2 is equipped with an IPS matrix manufactured by LG or Hitachi. I have a smartphone with a Hitachi display. The screen characteristics are at the highest level: wide viewing angles, good contrast. The coating is glass, not Gorila Glass, although there were rumors about its presence. The screen diagonal is 4”, resolution is 800x480 pixels, screen ppi is 233.

Unfortunately, I was never able to catch sunlight, but on a normal winter day, the screen remains readable even at a brightness of 40%.

Overall, the display left an extremely positive impression. Just raise the resolution to QHD (expected in the G2S model) and for me personally the screen would be ideal.

Camera

The main camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels. There is autofocus and a very weak LED flash.
Examples of shots with HDR (right) and without (left) are shown below.

The smartphone can shoot video in HD quality. The video quality is below average.

The photo quality is average, no different from other Chinese smartphones. Only the presence of HDR slightly sweetens the overall impression (although 99% of smartphones have it).

Operating system, firmware

The model runs on the Android 4.0.4 operating system. I recommend immediately switching to custom firmware All in one v. 1 from savyol. Only because root access has already been installed there, Chinese software has been cleaned and other pleasant little things have been done. There are also several patches, including the one that is responsible for the correct operation of the three-color LED.

List of changes made:

  • CWM recovery
  • Boot with root shell + added ext2simg to remove backup via adb
  • Root and superuser + rootexplorer
  • Chinese software removed
  • Russian T9 in the dialer
  • Login and password removed from Russian OPSOS
  • Updated hosts
  • There is no JIAYU icon in the application menu; Chinese links in the browser have been replaced with domestic ones
  • Replaced MMS/SMS application (backup/restore available on memory card)
  • Added an engineering menu in the Developer Options item.
  • Extended shutdown menu, there is a recovery option
  • Fix fonts
You can read the instructions for installing custom firmware in the JIAYU G2 topic on the thematic forum. In the header, under the spoiler “Custom firmware”.

Results

JIAYU G2- the only 4-inch Android smartphone with 1 GB of RAM in the price category under $200. Its main advantages include a high-quality IPS screen, a platform that is powerful enough for comfortable work and, of course, a convenient size. Among the shortcomings, we can note the poor optimization of the firmware, which quickly eats up the 2000 mAh battery. Well, still, I will not recommend this device to people who want to “buy and use”, given the price - this is more of a toy for geeks or a first smartphone for a child.

Review of the 4-inch Chinese smartphone Jiayu G2 with 1 RAM and dual-core MTK6577, operating at 1 GHz.

The smartphone came to me in a small, dented box, tightly packed with components. When unpacking I was pleasantly surprised -

inside a branded cardboard box with the Jiayu logo (which, after getting acquainted with Russian post, looked quite dented)

there was a case made of thick plastic, which could not be easily dented (I think that it played a decisive role in the fact that everything arrived intact).

Equipment

The equipment is quite standard. However, the components, unfortunately, are of very questionable quality, and most of them can immediately be sent to a landfill:

  • headset - you can talk on it, but it’s absolutely not suitable for music. Most configurations do not include a headset;
  • protective film for the screen - it’s nice that it’s there, but I still have it untouched;
  • adapter - 500 mA, toy type. Due to the fact that it is used in conjunction with an adapter, it is absolutely useless;
  • The adapter for domestic sockets is made very poorly. Due to the fact that it comes off, even the most persistent are unlikely to be able to use it;
  • microUSB adapter is a regular adapter, made quite well;
  • documentation;
  • battery;
  • smartphone Jiayu G2 - we will talk about it further.

Appearance

The phone is pleasing to the eye; the sloping back cover creates the illusion that the device is thinner than it is (although the thickness is already 10.4 mm). The screen is covered with tempered glass - there are rumors that it is Gorilla Glass, but this does not really matter - the coating is of high quality, there are no scratches on it after 4 months of use.

The phone has a solid weight, fits nicely in the hand, the back cover is made of elastic rubberized material (at least that’s how it feels).

Photo Jiayu G2 (MTK6577):

There are three keys on the front side - two touch, one mechanical. The latter has a small but very unpleasant play

The headphone jack and power button are located on the top edge of the smartphone

Using Jiayu G2 (MTK6577)

The device copes with most everyday tasks assigned to it without any problems. There are no critical comments in the operation of the hardware:

  • works correctly with 2 SIM cards;
  • Wi-Fi connects quickly, the reception level, when compared with other phones, is within normal limits;
  • 3g works flawlessly;
  • There is support for recording video in HD quality, but these are only numbers. The actual video quality is quite average.
  • the photos are quite decent for a smartphone;
  • GPS is not fast, searching for satellites in open space takes a long time (I didn’t use it often, but each time the search took about 5 minutes);
  • The sensors work flawlessly, with the exception of the compass - it’s not clear where it points. Perhaps you just need to calibrate it (since I don’t need it, I didn’t bother with it).
  • The battery lasts for an average of 36 hours of use (with conversations, music and games on the road, and the Internet if necessary). If you do not turn off Wi-fi, then about 14 hours.
  • microphone - the interlocutor hears everything clearly, the interlocutor can be clearly heard through the speaker.
  • The screen is bright, but on a sunny day it’s practically unreadable.
  • The front camera is suitable for video calls;
  • An external speaker is unlikely to be suitable for comfortable listening to music. But in itself it is quite loud (when using an alarm clock, for example, it will wake up anyone).
  • the buttons do not stick, the moment of pressing is clearly felt (with the exception of the play of the mechanical button on the front side).

Sample videos shot by Jiayu G2 (MTK6577)

A fairly productive and stable platform, 1Gb RAM opens up a wide range of functionality for us to use.

The smartphone can easily handle watching HD videos. Due to the screen having a fairly high resolution (for its size), video quality is of fundamental importance. For example, a video of 640×360 pixels looks quite uncomfortable; I would like the resolution to be higher.

Most modern games will work on the Jiayu G2, but of course, every day more and more new ones are released, and every day less and less of them will work. Therefore, this smartphone is not suitable for chasing the gaming industry. But, as mentioned earlier, at the moment most of the games are working. For example, I installed Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour and it worked without lags.

In addition to a bunch of useless Chinese software, the factory firmware also contains the Play Market - it works, so you will experience all the delights of Google services.

Although everything works in principle in the factory firmware, the abundance of incomprehensible Chinese programs causes confusion. Since the phone has a huge army of active users, it was not difficult to find custom firmware, where Chinese applications were cut out, Root and other useful things were added.

Results

To sum it up, the device turns out to be very good.

Strengths of Jiayu G2 (MTK6577):

  • size/performance ratio. I can’t immediately name another phone with a 4-inch diagonal and similar characteristics;
  • high-quality materials from which the device is made;
  • stability of operation of all components;
  • price (up to $180);
  • a large community of users, which successfully replaces the lion's share of official support.

Weak sides Jiayu G2 (MTK6577):

  • The fit of the body parts is not very high quality - the mechanical key on the front side is loose;
  • Despite the fairly high-quality screen, a burning pixel was detected on my device. Yes, it is practically invisible, but it is there, and this cannot but upset;
  • low-quality components;
  • lack of support on the territory of the Russian Federation - if something breaks, you will have to repair it yourself or at the nearest kiosk “Used phones, inexpensive repairs!”;
  • mediocre shooting quality.

Despite the listed disadvantages, after using the device there are still positive feelings. And the strengths of the device are much stronger than the weaknesses. In its price category, this is undoubtedly one of the best.

    First of all, the price, I bought it in August 2014 for 3600 rubles (version with our 3g) and for this price it is an ideal phone. -The screen is bright, juicy, thanks to OGS technology, not bad viewing angles, no pixels are visible. -The camera is good. - The audio chip is not bad, now the cowon player is gathering dust on the shelf :) - Plays all games (due to the low screen resolution)

    I liked everything, both cameras work perfectly, no glitches

    2 years ago 0

    Small, excellent screen, excellent sound, works for a long time, has MIUI firmware and others. Cool practical bumper included.

    2 years ago 0

    Does not slow down or glitch in average applications and games. Somehow I didn’t have a chance to check the maximum power. - The brightness of the screen backlight is enough for your eyes even in the sun - A very loud external speaker (at maximum volume in the room you just jump in place when a call rings nearby) - When you hold it in your hands, you feel that the device is made with high quality and feels pleasantly heavy - At a minimum use (I receive only 1-2 calls a day + the Internet is always on in the background), the phone lives quietly for 3-4 days, which for me has become an incredibly useful quality.

    Good display, not glitchy, everything you need works, the screen is not a shovel. Lots of firmware - I used MIUI myself. All applications can be transferred to a flash card without any problems - there is enough memory for everything. GPS works well, everything was fine. The camera is not even bad at all, I use a DSLR myself. The battery lasts well from morning to evening, but if you play, you’ll lose it in 3 hours - like on all Android devices. The connection is good, WiFi and blue tooth work correctly.

    Many alternative firmwares. Everything works stably. The battery with MIUI firmware lasts for 5 days if you only call for 15-30 minutes. Doesn't slow down. 2 SIM cards. Great camera. Stable connection, you can clearly, loudly and clearly hear the interlocutor.

    The touchpad sometimes clicks randomly.
    The volume rocker and power button are simply of terrible quality, they peeled off in just a month, “they’re walking around.”
    It turned off once for no reason and did not want to turn on, it did not respond to the original charger, a more powerful charge from the asus t100ta tablet helped, the phone started up and so far this situation has not repeated.

    The screen seems to be covered with protective glass, but in fact, without any falls or serious injuries, a noticeable small scratch appeared just a couple of weeks later.
    - There is no illumination of the lower control buttons
    - Heats up noticeably under high load and when charging the phone
    - In contrast to the economical charge consumption during inactivity, under medium-high load the battery runs out quite quickly (you can drain it in less than a day)
    - Prices for covers in Moscow time are ridiculously high. I ordered through ebay.

    1. Sometimes it freezes for no reason. The only cure is to remove the battery.
    2. Charger included. When charging, it gets very hot in the camera area.

    1. It gets hot in the chamber area during load. 2. On standard firmware, the charge runs out quickly. 3. Average camera.

    It gets hot in games - but this is such a processor, there were no glitches with it. There is no aleophobic glass coating - but it’s understandable - the price! I would like a larger battery.

    Doesn't immediately detect GPS satellites

    Not very high quality plastic. With several assemblies and disassemblies, the back cover breaks. After a few months, the bumper began to play. The screen is a little blue

    On the native firmware it froze when waking up through the alarm clock.
