All tablets. Tablet PCs (tablets, tablets) - what do we know about them? Tablet PCs vs. Laptops

Tablet PC

Toshiba 3500 Tablet Laptop

Tablet personal computer (tablet pc, tablet PC) - a class of laptops equipped with a tablet handwriting input device combined with a screen. A tablet computer allows you to work with a stylus or fingers, without using a keyboard or mouse.

The user can enter text using the built-in handwriting recognition program, on-screen (virtual) keyboard, speech recognition, or a regular keyboard (if the device has one).

Most tablet PCs run the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system. Tablet PCs went on wide sale after the release of this edition, in the fall of the year. Before this, devices of this type were used in narrower markets - in manufacturing, medicine and government agencies. There are also tablets running various variants of GNU/Linux.

According to design, tablet PCs are divided into:

  • "clean tablets"- devices without a full keyboard;
  • tablet laptops, also called "convertibles" convertible) or transformers, because of its ability to transform: the device can look like a laptop, the screen can be rotated around its axis by 180° and placed on the keyboard - the laptop will look like a tablet.
  • UMPC- a compact version of a tablet computer designed to replace a PDA. It has some design differences, as well as some differences in the interface, since it is designed specifically for finger control. May have a built-in keyboard, usually non-standard.

In addition, tablet computers are divided into two classes based on the principle of operation of the tablet:

  • Electromagnetic principle of tablet operation. The most numerous class, allows you to work with the tablet only with the help of a special stylus. The advantages of this approach are the high accuracy of text recognition, the accuracy of determining the pressure applied, as well as the lack of reaction to accidental pressing of the hand or fingers when writing. As a rule, Wacom technology is used.
  • Pressure sensitive tablet. Less numerous class, although becoming more popular over time. The advantage is that such a tablet can be controlled without using a stylus, which can be convenient in some situations. In addition, this approach makes it possible to create interfaces specifically designed for finger control, including recognition of multiple touches and gestures. UMPCs belong to this class. The disadvantages are less accuracy, worse quality of letter recognition, the negative impact of the tablet on the quality and brightness of the screen, as well as the possibility of accidental clicks when writing.

The most popular tablet laptops are Acer and Fujitsu, as well as

Tablet PCs vs. Laptops

Advantages

  • A tablet PC is much more “human” - you can stand or walk with it, holding it in one hand. The second hand can be used to enter text or click on links while surfing the web. It is convenient to read e-books using the vertical screen orientation.
  • Lying on a table, the folded tablet allows you to work without interrupting your line of sight (for example, in a business meeting)

Flaws

  • A tablet laptop is about $300 more expensive than a regular laptop with the same specifications, although this difference is expected to decrease to $75 over time.
  • The screen of a tablet laptop is less secure because the screen is held on one rotating hinge - unlike a regular laptop, the screen of which is held on two hinges.
  • The tablet PC screen is currently limited to 14 inches. In addition, a special pressure-sensitive screen coating reduces viewing angles and brightness.

What is Tablet PC?

Tablet PC (PS tablet) is a type of mobile computer in the form of a tablet. Its prototype was first presented in the early 90s by the company Pen Computing entitled PenGo Tablet Computer. Microsoft Corporation took up further development of this area. In 2002, Microsoft first introduced a working tablet computer with the Windows XP operating system.
Thanks to touch screen technology, the user can operate the tablet PC using a stylus or fingertips, without using a mouse or keyboard.

Tablet PC is a laptop, but with more capabilities

It is a full-fledged laptop, but with additional functions. Special handle ( stylus) is used to work directly on a computer screen. With its help, you can perform absolutely all tasks that can be performed with a regular computer mouse, such as selecting, copying and opening files, entering text or drawing. Some tablet PCs have a non-touch screen, but their stylus is made electronic. Thus, such PCs receive information only from the tip of the pen, and not from the tips of the fingers or touching any other objects. This technology makes it very convenient to use a Tablet PC on vacation, in transport, where you have to write “in weight” when the user’s wrist also lies on the screen. In this case, neither elements of clothing nor movement of the wrist on the screen will lead to the entry of incorrect information.

Tablet PC is easier and more convenient to use than a regular laptop. Unlike desktop computers or laptops, a Tablet PC does not require a flat surface to operate on. For example, if you are at a meeting or presentation, then such a computer will not hide you from your interlocutors, unlike the monitors of a regular laptop or desktop PC. Additionally, tablet PCs can be used while moving or standing, making them ideal for people who are constantly on their feet, such as sales managers, nurses, doctors, waiters, and so on.

Types of tablet computers

There are many manufacturers that produce tablet PCs, differing in size, design, computing speed, etc. But according to their design features, they can all be divided into three types:

Convertible Tablet PC. These tablets look like a regular laptop, as they have a standard laptop keyboard. But their screens rotate 180° around their axis and, moreover, turn out and fold on the other side of the keyboard. After such transformations, the Tablet PC will have a touch screen on one side and a keyboard on the other. Such PCs are also called tablet laptops or tablet netbooks.

Blank Tablet PC. Actually a real tablet computer without a full keyboard, in an ultra-light body and with an elegant design. Some models of such tablet PCs have keyboards, but, as a rule, their keyboards do not have a hard connection to the screen, and all interaction with the PC occurs through the interface Bluetooth.

Shockproof Tablet PC- reliable mobile computers with shockproof housing and hard drive. These extra-durable tablet PC models are ideal for those who need to use them in harsh environments, such as military service, construction, and anywhere else where durability is paramount.

Just like regular laptops, tablet PCs have:

modern high-speed processors optimized for mobile platforms
Enough RAM to handle most tasks
large capacity hard drives
support for wired and wireless networks, modem connections
Compatible with many software and peripherals

Tablet PCs today are the culmination of the development of mobile computing due to their size, weight and ease of input. Tablet PCs are typically used in places where daily use of laptops is cumbersome and impractical, or cannot provide the required functionality. Such laptop computers are ideal for reading e-books, listening to music, watching videos and photo albums, and, of course, surfing the Internet.

TO tablet personal computers (Tablet PC) The first releases include one of the types of laptops based on the Microsoft Tablet PC platform. They are equipped with a computer that is controlled by fingers or a stylus, and such a computer can also use a keyboard and mouse. These tablets are equipped with computer operating systems: Windows NT (XP, 7), Apple Mac OS X, Linux. Thanks to this, it is possible to use programs from a regular computer on this tablet.

Tablet PC

The first models of tablet personal computers were based on regular laptops, but only with the use of touch screens. Such screens were rotatable, and this allowed an ordinary laptop to be transformed into a tablet. The appearance of new devices on wide sale became possible after Microsoft announced the release of a new (for 2002) Microsoft Tablet PC platform.

Tablet PC

Slate PC

The development of the Microsoft Tablet PC platform of 2002 and the Ultra-Mobile PC platform of 2006 led to the emergence of the Slate PC platform (thin PC) in 2010.

Based on the Tablet PC of the early 2000s, the so-called Slate PC was developed; this model was more compact. This platform was introduced in 2010. This computer was also compatible with the IBM PC, and used the operating system of a desktop computer, but redesigned for touch control. There was no longer a hardware keyboard, and the screen diagonal was no more than 11 inches. The Slate PC was at one time a direct competitor to non-IBM computers. That's when the first iPad came out, and it was with it that the Slate PC had to compete. But we can say that the Slate PC is also an Internet tablet, only it is compatible with IBM computers. The main advantage of Slate PC is its compatibility with regular computers and the ability to use programs written for desktop PCs. It worked under Windows 7, redesigned for touch control. Hence the main drawback of such tablet computers is poor controllability, because Windows was developed for desktop computers and was only slightly redesigned for tablets. But Windows 8 is planned to be released in the spring of 2012, and its release is associated with a possible rise in the popularity of Windows-compatible tablets. In the meantime, there is complete dominance of Internet tablets, for example, the iPad model from Apple and other models from other companies with operating systems from smartphones.

Slate PC Tablet Example

The difference between the Slate PC and an Internet tablet is the type of operating system used and its compatibility with IBM computers, which allows the use of a set of other programs (already created for desktop computers), unlike an Internet tablet. Slate PC uses the OS from a personal computer. For example, Windows XP, 7 allows you to use software written for these systems (for example, the Office suite). Also, in such systems, multitasking and working with windows are always well implemented, when each running program can be seen in its own window. On an Internet tablet, to work with two running applications, you will have to constantly switch between them.

A virtual keyboard is used, but it is also possible to connect a hardware keyboard, for example, via the Bluetooth interface.

Slate PC with Windows 7

The developers immediately identified areas of application for the Slate PC: reading e-books, watching videos, listening to music, surfing the Internet. That is, the main purpose of thin tablet devices (Slate - thin) is the consumption of content, not its creation.

Tablet PCs, or tablet computers, are mobile devices with liquid crystal touch displays that support handwriting input and are equipped with one of the operating systems Windows XP Tablet PC Edition or Windows Vista.

In terms of dimensions and basic capabilities, they basically correspond to Slim laptops - they have the same processors, hard drives, and interfaces.

Structurally, tablet computers are divided into two categories: “pure” tablets with touch screens (something like an “overgrown” PDA, this also includes the newfangled ultra-mobile PCs - UMPC), as well as keyboard tablets (or “transformer” laptops), These are full-fledged laptops equipped with a keyboard, in which the touch display can be turned “face” outward and cover the keyboard.

Oddly enough, today we know much more about tablets than we did just six months ago. And why all? Yes, because the queen of PR and promotion, Apple, launched its iPad on the market, which marked the beginning of the era of tablet laptops. However, in fairness, it is worth noting that even before Apple’s creation, this type of portable computer existed and was even gaining momentum in terms of sales. So Apple very successfully fell into the general trend, at the same time fueling interest in this type of computer, so surprising for ordinary users.

So, what is a tablet laptop, or Tablet PC? This is a portable device, which, as a rule, has a fairly small display diagonal, comparable to a netbook - usually 9-12″. However, there are also larger “tablets” – up to 13″, and very small tablets with a diagonal of 7-8″. They have a touch screen and can be controlled with either your fingers or a stylus. In many ways, a tablet laptop should be considered as the successor to PDAs, which are now almost completely a thing of the past.

Tablets may also have a physical keyboard. If it is, then this laptop will be called a transformer. Its screen can be easily unfolded and laid flat on the keyboard, allowing it to be used like a regular tablet. If there is no physical keyboard, then there is an on-screen, virtual one. By the way, transformers, as a rule, cost much more than regular tablets - they are considered representatives of the business class of laptops. A cost of $2000 is not uncommon for them. In addition, they have greater performance and are able to cope not only with basic tasks, but also with processes that are more demanding on computer resources.

Tablet laptops appeal to those who don't need to type a lot of text, but who like to watch movies or surf the Internet outside the home. Such people do not need to carry a full-fledged laptop with them; a tablet will suffice for them. As an option, you can buy a netbook.

Well, now - the brightest representatives of tablet laptops in 2010.

Conversations about him have not stopped for several months now. They praise him, scold him, treat him indifferently - but they talk, talk, talk... Quite controversial, but at the same time very stylish, as always, a solution from Apple. Inside is an exclusive Apple A4 processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, the company’s own development. Not as productive a tablet as we would like, but very status-worthy.

At the moment (May 2010) it has not yet been released, but it is already one of the most anticipated new products on the market. It differs favorably from the iPad in the presence of USB ports, a webcam and the ability to play Flash video. Based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset, running Android OS.

Another not yet released tablet. The same advantages as the ASUS Eee Pad, as well as an Intel Atom Z530 processor and Windows 7 OS. Although it is not declared as an iPad killer, it may well compete for this title.

An interesting tablet from German manufacturers. Atom N450, 11″, Android OS, camera, USB and everything else included. Looks great and is already on sale.

A typical representative of transformers is expensive, productive and very high-status. Excellent characteristics - 12″, magnesium alloy case, Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processor, large hard drive and optical drive. At the same time, it can be dropped (though from a height of 70 cm, no more) and water can be splashed on it (the keyboard is protected from this).

A more or less budget transformer, however, it is powered by a rather weak Intel Pentium SU4100 processor (1.3 GHz). But 4 GB of RAM, a 320 GB hard drive and Windows 7. An excellent option for those looking for an inexpensive tablet with a physical keyboard.
