Sony xperia z4 technical specifications. "The world's lightest" tablet Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet

I have unpretentious taste -
The best is enough for me.
— Oscar Wilde

Until recently, Sony released an average of two flagship Z-smartphones per year and only one Z-tablet. It is likely that now new “tablets” from Sony will appear more often, while smartphones, on the contrary, will appear less often. See for yourself: relatively recently, at the end of 2014, the Z3 Tablet Compact was released - the first eight-inch device in the current line of Xperia Z tablets. Already now, after only about six months, a new Sony “tablet” has entered the market - the Xperia Z4 Tablet. It, like the first gadgets of the Tablet Z series, is ten-inch. True, its resolution is not Full HD, as before, but 2K - 2560 × 1600 pixels. This is the main feature of the device. The gadget is also equipped with the new eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 platform. The remaining technical characteristics of the Xperia Z4 Tablet, judging by the comparison table below, are almost the same as those of the Z3 Tablet Compact and Z2 Tablet. Maybe there's something about the Z4 Tablet that the specs plate can't convey?

Potential buyers of the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet should take into account that there are two modifications of this tablet on the Russian market: one can access the Internet only via a Wi-Fi connection, and the other can also be accessed via 3G/LTE. The modification with a built-in modem is designated by the internal number SGP771RU, which is what we tested. The version that is content with only Wi-Fi networks is designated SGP712RU. Be careful when purchasing!

⇡ Appearance and ergonomics

The appearance of the new Sony tablet shows the same changes that we saw in the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. The sharp edges of the body became convex, and the almost right corners became rounded and less prickly. In addition, the gadget not only visually looks lighter than its predecessor - the tablet has lost weight from 440 grams to 396 grams in comparison with the Z2 Tablet. “Exiting” four hundred grams for a ten-inch tablet is really worth a lot.

There are also changes that are almost invisible to the eye. For example, the thickness of the body of the same Xperia Z2 Tablet was 6.4 millimeters; the new Z4 Tablet has only 6.1 mm - the same as the Apple iPad Air 2. At the time of publication of this article, the device is one of the thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablets running the Android operating system.

Compact tablets with a display diagonal of seven or eight inches are more popular than their larger, full-size brothers because they are lighter and easier to use in a canopy. Ten-inch tablets are often large and bulky. However, this has nothing to do with the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet - in terms of ease of use anywhere outside the home, due to its small weight and pleasant-to-touch body, it is not inferior to more compact options. Your hands don’t get tired of it, even if you hold the tablet suspended for a long time. There is also the other side of the coin: the device looks noticeably simpler than the previous full-size Sony tablet - Xperia Z2 Tablet.

The layout of the tablet's controls is completely standard for Sony tablets - if you've worked with devices from the Xperia Z Tablet line before, then getting used to the new product won't be the slightest bit difficult. There is nothing on the front panel except the display and the front camera. Hardware power and volume keys are located on the left side. The buttons have a short and distinct stroke.

A universal 3.5 mm jack for connecting a wired headset is located at the top end. Next to it is a slot for installing a microSD memory card and a Nano-SIM format SIM card. The MHL interface, which combines a video output and a high-speed Micro-USB 3.0 port, is located on the right side. It is noteworthy that its plastic plug is amputated - protection against water ingress is implemented without it. The company calls this solution Cap-less USB. The bottom edge of the tablet body is empty - with the advent of Cap-less USB, the need for a docking station has disappeared.

Compact, protected from dust and moisture according to IP65/68 standards. This means that the Xperia Z4 Tablet can be kept in fresh water at a depth of up to one and a half meters for half an hour, provided that the cover for microSD and Nano-SIM cards is tightly closed. The Z4 Tablet is available in two colors - black and white.

Sony updates its tablets once a year, and year after year they get better and better. I wonder how many years it will take for a tablet with a ten-inch display to turn into an ideal product with almost no flaws...

Design, construction

Dimensions are 254 x 167 x 6.1 mm, weight - only 390 grams. Not bad performance for a tablet with a ten-inch display. The body is made of rough plastic, not velvety, but rough, fingerprints are visible only on the display. If you don’t like plastic, then there aren’t really any options, then immediately look towards the iPad. There are no questions about the assembly, we finally got rid of the plugs, the 3.5 mm and microUSB connectors are open. Yes, the slot for a memory card and a SIM card (nanoSIM), of course, is under a flap. Magnetic charging is a thing of the past, this is due to the abandonment of the microUSB plug, now there is no need for it. There is protection against water, the tablet can easily survive even when submerged to a depth of one and a half meters. After salt water it will need to be rinsed, but this is the usual rule for devices with a similar degree of protection. Two body colors, black and white, no other color options.

The tablet looks good, the frames are not that big, the buttons and ends are branded. There are complaints about the location of the power and volume buttons; I often accidentally blocked the device. On the back there is an NFC area, a camera, and no flash.

The branded case for the tablet is not very beautiful, but it allows you to install the Z4 Tablet to watch videos, but the keyboard is made in a very interesting way. It instantly turns the Z4 into a “Chromebook”, there is a touchpad, a cursor appears on the screen, the keys are made well, it’s quite possible to sit down and type a small text. The tablet is inserted into the groove until it clicks, the complete impression is like a compact laptop - the design is somewhat reminiscent of the Sony VAIO X. It was a beautiful laptop, although it was insanely slow. At the time of X, could Sony imagine what awaited the company in the near future? No, they couldn't. In any case, if you want to buy a Sony laptop now, buy a tablet with a keyboard.

Let me remind you once again that a nanoSIM card is used, the tablet can be used for voice calls with or without a headset.

I’ll say one thing about ergonomics: it’s nice to hold the tablet in your hands, because it’s light, but any attempt to watch a movie fails - you need to either buy a branded case, or build a stand, somewhere to lean the Z4 Tablet, and so that there is a support at the bottom. The tablet easily slides off and falls onto the table. The speakers are not very loud, so I used an external speaker to watch TV shows.

I would like to point out that we are using the photo at first glance, since the appearance of the device has not changed.

Display

The diagonal of the IPS display is 10.1 inches, resolution is 2560 x 1600 pixels. The screen is bright and somehow calm, there are no flashy acidic colors here, like in Samsung tablets. Maybe it’s also a matter of the operating system; Lollipop has an extremely laconic design. The image quality is good, but in commercial samples there are problems, at least there are user complaints about uneven illumination. I specifically mention this so that you carefully examine the display in different applications and menus before purchasing. My sample had no problems.

There is a color temperature setting in the menu, this will help someone. The light sensor sometimes works completely unexpectedly, for example, in the evening the backlight decreases very much, and it is impossible to read any website. So, I set the brightness to three quarters, which seems optimal to me.

The viewing angles of the screen are good, and for watching movies it is also close to ideal, given the aspect ratio. But let me just remind you about the miniature speaker (or headphones) and the case, they will come in handy when paired with the Z4 Tablet. Here's the situation: you won't be able to put it on an airplane without a cover, or you'll have to prop the case up with various objects.

Modifications and performance

Two main modifications are supplied to our market: the version with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 4G. Moreover, LTE Advanced is supported, in theory this is a speed of up to 300 Mbit/s, in practice you can achieve about 100 Mbit/s. As Sony says, Russian operators are quite ready for this technology. As for memory, one version with 32 GB on board. But there is a slot for microUSB memory cards, so you can always expand it. Cards up to 128 GB are supported. The presence of a slot is a pleasant difference from Apple tablets, but, in fact, this is the only advantage.

The tablet already comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop, like the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua, these are the first signs of the company where the “lollipop” is installed by default. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 platform with Adreno 430 GPU is used; you can read more about it. Another thing worth mentioning is the 3 GB of RAM. I didn’t notice any performance problems; you can run the most hardware-demanding applications and games. I didn’t notice any lags when working with the menu.

Like the Z3 family, it supports work with PS4, the tablet can be connected via Wi-Fi to the console and use the device’s screen to play together with the DualShock 4 joystick. The display is no longer touch-sensitive, the image from the console is transmitted there, if you explain on your fingers, Z4 Tablet turns into a miniature TV. There will be a special holder for the joystick; you can put a smartphone or tablet there. For now, all this will only work within the home Wi-Fi network, but they promise to expand the possibilities - for example, in another city, turn on the console using the Z4, launch CoD, put the tablet in the joystick and quietly play for an hour before going to bed. Given the display resolution, problems with detail are unlikely to arise.

There is support for Hi-Res Sound, which means not only different formats, but also a number of software features. For example, this includes digital noise reduction, automatic “correction” of low-quality tracks, automatic equalizer adjustment for your headphones, and expanded capabilities for working with wireless headsets. It’s gratifying that Sony continues to pay attention to sound this year, but in reality it would be better if the company paid more attention to the final quality of the product.

The menu has familiar Sony applications and a familiar design, which irritates many people - I personally am annoyed by the AVG Protection antivirus, but the rest can be lived with. The tablet with Lollipop has a minimalist menu with beautiful icons and a beautifully designed notification panel; from a locked display you can immediately go to the calling program; you can add icons for launching mini-applications to the menu of running programs, for example, a calculator, a timer and other utilities.

Camera

The main camera is 8.1 MP, the front camera is 5.1 MP, you can see examples of photos below - it is very difficult to take a normal photo, because the camera here is frankly weak, especially in comparison with the iPad. In poor lighting conditions, this task becomes even more difficult, the device misses, there are highlights, overexposures, and the pictures turn out blurry. There are a lot of settings - very little sense. On the iPad you need to point and shoot, but here you need to hold it tightly, press firmly and pray that everything works. But, alas, it doesn’t always work.

Nutrition

The battery capacity is 6000 mAh, there is something interesting. Firstly, this tablet is protected from water, like other flagship Sony devices, but it uses capless usb, that is, a microUSB connector without plugs. Secondly, Qualcomm quick charge 2.0 fast charging technology is supported; in an hour you can charge the tablet up to 70 percent. It will take another hour and a half to fully charge the battery. The good thing here is that previously Sony tablets had to be charged overnight. Well, now you can plug it into the outlet for an hour and then continue to go about your business. True, it will still take about five-plus hours to fully charge when using the supplied power supply (alas). Thirdly, to use Qualcomm quick charge 2.0, the device must support this technology and a special power supply is needed. And here is an interesting point: it turns out that a lot of Sony devices can work with this technology; you only need a special power supply (!). And Sony will sell it this year – and sell it, and maybe even add it to the kit (!). The technology works with the Z2 and all devices in the Z3 family, I can’t wait to try it with my smartphone.

The power supply is called Quick Charger UCH10, price 1,590 rubles, already available in the company store, I advise all owners of Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet to buy it. And I also advise owners of Sony Xperia Z2, Z3, Z3 Compact to buy it.

In video viewing mode, the stated operating time is about 17 hours; in reality, the tablet can actually work for a very, very long time; if it’s not too painful, it’s two days. Otherwise, it all depends on the applications used - as with other Sony devices, it is better not to use Chrome and monitor the running social networking utilities, for example, Facebook also drains the battery very quickly.

It's a pity that the kit does not include a power supply for fast charging.

conclusions

I really love Sony, Sony products, smartphones are getting better every year - that’s how good the Z3 Compact turned out. And in Z3+ they added almost everything they could. It works for a long time, there is no microUSB plug, the camera is good. You can, you can live! But Sony somehow doesn’t succeed with tablets. It’s not possible to finish it to a relative ideal. Although I can name one such thing, it’s the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact - it’s a great device, and you can buy it now for 23,990 rubles.

And the Z4 Tablet is offered in the company store for 46,990 rubles, version with 32 GB of memory, Wi-Fi + LTE. There is a “bundle” with a BKB50 keyboard worth 52,990 rubles. The version without LTE costs 41,990 rubles. Even if you hate Apple, it’s worth looking at the iPad Air 2, however, Sony acted cleverly, there is no iPad with 32 GB in the line, but there is a version with 64 GB, Wi-Fi + LTE, and the model costs 48,990 rubles in the Apple store. You can look for “American”, it will be cheaper.

What advantages does the Sony tablet have over the iPad Air 2? On paper there are many of them, the Z4 Tablet is lighter, is not afraid of water, they say Android gives the user more freedom (but that’s just what they say). In reality, there are only two advantages - the tablet can be used as a smartphone with or without a headset, you buy a SIM card, and you can immediately make calls. If you want, look at sites, if you want, communicate. The second advantage is support for memory cards; by the way, applications can also be placed on the card.

This is where the benefits end. The plastic body looks cheap, the screen seems to be good, but there are too many complaints online about defects and uneven illumination, and the camera is no good compared to the iPad. Highlights, problems with sharpness, and even in HDR mode it doesn’t happen all the time. The tablet body gets hot, but God bless it.

Let's look at the pros and cons of the device, I'll start with the cons.

  • Long charging time, the kit does not include a power supply for Qualcomm quick charge 2.0 - given the price of the tablet, they could have included such a power supply in the kit
  • The shooting quality is not very good for a premium device, most pictures simply don’t work out (with video the situation is a little better) Why not put a normal camera module here, like in the Z3? Is this going to be a big price increase?
  • The case is thin, light, which seems great - but this case also seems flimsy, and immediately get ready to spend money on a case for the device so that you can watch videos and not hold the tablet in your hands.
  • Good hardware, efficient processor - get ready for the heat. Although this is a relative minus
  • The speakers disappointed me in everyday use
  • Users complain about the quality of the screen, so we advise you to carefully check the display before purchasing
  • The price “pleases” many consumers - well, don’t forget that you can always sell an iPad on the secondary market, but with a Sony tablet you will suffer

Pros:

  • Waterproof, although I don't think tablets are often exposed to jets of water or the sea. I think it's more of a marketing thing
  • The microUSB plug has disappeared
  • Supports fast charging and good battery life
  • Performance processor
  • LTE support and voice calling capabilities
  • Good display (with a number of caveats, read above)
  • Thin and light case for a 10-inch tablet (but there are caveats)
  • Android 5.0 out of the box
  • There is a radio. Isn't that a plus?

I personally would live with the price if Sony made a Sony tablet. That is, you are waiting, as of old, for technology and design. A display without frames, an excellent camera, at least like in smartphones of last year, so that the set includes noise-canceling headphones and a power supply with support for fast charging, so that the back or the entire body is made of glass or metal. In general, if you’re going to pay fifty thousand, then pay for the THING. Not everything is perfect here, and you can sympathize with the company’s engineers; it feels like high-quality components are being taken away from them and are not allowed to be used in the company’s tablets. Meanwhile, the company does not make a hundred tablets with different names and characteristics in one year, but only one or two. Could everything be done perfectly or close to it? Yes, I think it's possible.

Nice try, Sony, but I hope that in my review of the Z5 Tablet I won’t have to write a list of shortcomings at all.

So Sony decided to release a new flagship, although it was announced only for Japan, but not without reason. The new model will not be much different from the Sony Xperia Z3. It is quite simple to explain the reason for the repetition; good design and good functionality did their job and the smartphone turned out to be quite successful, and the appearance of a new model can be explained by the continuity of production, so it is not economically profitable to fence a garden for the sake of an already existing device, only with minor changes. Today I want to pay attention to this particular smartphone, since the interest in it is quite high, especially for those who are interested in new products, as well as, of course, Sony fans. In this article, we will look at the expected main characteristics, and also see its possible pros and cons, which will help you choose the best smartphone as a gift for your loved ones or buy for yourself.

First impression

One of the main changes is the reduction in thickness. The new flagship will be thinner than HTC, Samsung Galaxy S6, IPhone 6. The thickness of Sony Xperia Z4 is expected to be about 6.9 or 6.3 mm. This device will have a card slot. According to rumors, the new phone will also have protection against dust and moisture. I note that the owners of previous models complained about poor quality assembly, although the gadget was presented as protected. In addition, the microUSB connector has been moved to the bottom end, and it still does not have a plug, but if the assembly is of high quality, then immersion in water will not bring any special troubles. In the end, I can say that the appearance will not change, so you can just read the description of the Sony Xperia Z3.

Display

They say that there will be two screen options with FullHD and QuadHD screen resolution. Diagonal 5.2 inches, resolution 1920 by 1080 pixels. The display will be protected from scratches and other damage by Gorilla Glass. The protective glass has earned the approval of both owners and manufacturers. In the past, the company also had a problem with the firmware, we are talking about the so-called dead pixels, which make themselves felt over time. Otherwise, you can fight this, so it’s not so scary. It is unknown about the other characteristics, but based on the experience of previous models, color rendition is good, viewing angles are maximum, and the screen behaves well in the sun. In general, the characteristics are quite good, we can only hope for high-quality firmware.

Processor 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. RAM 3 GB, built-in 32 GB, expandable up to 128 GB using a memory card. The Sony Xperia Z4 will run on Android 5.0 Lollipop OS, with the addition of a software shell interface from Sony. In principle, the characteristics are normal, programs and applications run normally without freezing, there should be no problems with toys.

The battery capacity is 2930 mAh, which is definitely not a bad indicator even for such a processor, and it is also worth considering that the display is not very large, which allows the phone to hold a charge for a full day. Based on the previous model, I can say that the smartphone holds a charge: talk time is 16 hours, standby time is 920, while listening to music up to 130, and watching videos up to 10 hours. In general, I can say that the smartphone does not have a bad battery, but, of course, it depends on who uses it.

Camera

The main camera is 20.7 megapixels, the front one is 5.1, which will help you take high-quality selfies, not to mention chatting on Skype. There are also rumors that there will be the possibility of optical image stabilization, which will definitely improve the quality of the photo. Also, apparently, the autofocus function will remain. Of course, there are smartphones with better cameras, but here everything is not bad either, at least in the daytime the pictures are good.

Here's another interesting video review of the Sony Xperia Z4

As stated in the recent leak, just like that, quietly and inconspicuously, without unnecessary events and noisy presentations, on April 20, Sony presented a new version of the flagship Sony Xperia Z4! Yes, yes, this really happened, but the model is presented for release exclusively on the Japanese domestic market and under this name will be sold in its homeland approximately from the beginning of summer. The global market will see a smartphone under a different name - Xperia Z3 Neo or Xperia Z3+ and this will happen in May! This name would indeed be more logical, because we didn’t see much of a breakthrough - a slightly improved Xperia Z3 with more powerful hardware and a couple more new functions.

We can assume that this phone, when presented in our region, will mostly appeal to those who are just about to buy a top-end smartphone from the Japanese company, or who want to replace their old Xperia Z/Z1 with something fresh. We don't think it would be advisable to change the Xperia Z2/Z3. Well, now is the time to look at the technical innovations of the Xperia Z4.

Externally, the smartphone has not received significant changes, with the exception of the location of the stereo speakers and the front camera has been moved from the right side to the left side. And so we see an identical design concept for the Xperia Z3 - rounded all-metal edges, polymer corners. Although even from the photo you can see that the metal has become more shiny. Also, the new smartphone has become a little thinner and lighter than its predecessor - its dimensions are 146 x 72 x 6.9 mm and its weight is 14 grams. The high degree of protection from dust and moisture in accordance with the IP68 certificate has also been preserved, but the microUSB port is no longer covered with any plugs, it, like the audio connector, is not afraid of water - goodbye magnetic connector. The display remains the same dimensions - a 5.2-inch IPS matrix with Full HD resolution (1920 by 1080 pixels). The model will be produced in 4 colors: black, white, bronze, and also a new one – aquagreen (greenish-blue).

The hardware and technical equipment of the Sony Xperia Z4 received the most innovations. It uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset with a 64-bit octa-core processor with a frequency of 1.9 GHz and an Adreno 430 video accelerator. The amount of RAM is 3 GB, but the internal storage has increased to 32 GB and the phone has a slot for memory cards microSD The battery has also lost weight, with a capacity of 2930 mAh (compared to 3100 mAh in the Xperia Z3), although it is likely that optimization of the new chipset will allow achieving high battery life with a smaller capacity. Out of the box, Xperia Z4 runs Android 5 Lollipop.

The main camera has not received any changes - the same 20.7-megapixel Exmor RS module with G Lens optics and a BIONZ processing processor. But a lot of attention was paid to the front sensor, because the popularity of selfies is constantly growing and the Japanese wanted to satisfy the desires of users in this area. The Sony Xperia Z4 (Xperia Z3+) uses a 5-megapixel Exmor R front-facing camera with a 25mm wide-angle lens to get even more into the frame. By the way, some new features have appeared in the camera: in “Super Auto Mode” a new “Kitchen” scene has appeared, which will select the best settings if you photograph food (apparently for fans of filming their food for Instagram), as well as new applications “AR-mask” and “Stylish portrait” – augmented reality effects.

Along with the smartphone, they also presented a couple of branded accessories - cases with a smart window and a docking station for portrait placement of the device with a microUSB connector.

Now is the time to take stock. This is how the Xperia Z4 or Xperia Z3 Neo turned out; before the release in our region, it is not clear what to call it better.
