However, a few years ago, a new competitor appeared - Miracast. This is a technology that promises to connect computers and devices of all kinds of screens, without the use of wires and without the need for any special equipment.

What is Miracast and what does it do?

Miracast is a technology that allows you to create a wireless connection on a computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, projector or external monitor.

This is called a screencast (or projection screen) and means it can stream the image and audio stream from the device to the TV or external monitor that you are connecting to wirelessly.

This basically does the same thing as an HDMI cable. Some even call it "HDMI Wi-Fi" or "Wireless HDMI".

The Wi-Fi Alliance launched a certification program called Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast™ in 2012 and since then, many electronic device manufacturers have adopted this standard.

It received a lot of support from Intel in the early days, probably because Intel had its own solution called Intel WiDi when Miracast was not yet released.

How Miracast works

Miracast is a standard that relies on Wi-Fi Direct wireless network connections, which allows you to stream video to an external display with a maximum resolution of Full HD 1080p and 5.1 surround sound.

This means that the network works by creating a direct connection between the wireless device and the external screen.

It doesn't need your wireless home network. One way or another, this technology is very similar to ad hoc networks.

To connect to an external screen, the device creates a wireless network using the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) and WPA2 network standards, ensuring completely secure communication between them.

Miracast has a nice feature: it doesn't care what video or audio you stream from your device to your external display.

You can transfer copy-protected files, DVD movies, music CDs and any other type, regardless of the codecs or formats used.

How to use Miracast

The Miracast standard is relatively new, having been released in late 2012, but has received attention from many major companies in the tech world. As a result, you can use it on a large number of devices.

Miracast supports Microsoft Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile, Google Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and newer versions, many Smart TVs.

Flaws

There is only one drawback - the maximum transmission quality is 1920x1200, that is, you will not be able to transmit video in UltraHD. But it’s worth considering that almost no one has devices that support higher resolutions, and they are very expensive. So you will most likely never encounter this limitation.

How to find out if a device supports Miracast

There are four types of devices that often have Miracast support built into them: laptops running Windows, modern LCD TVs, phones and tablets running Android and iOS. Technology support depends on the company and device model; with this information, you can find a detailed description of your device on the Internet with a list of technologies it supports. The second way is to learn abilities manually using the instructions below.

Android

Most devices with standard firmware version 4.2 Jelly Bean and higher support this technology. To verify this, open the device settings and look for the “Wireless Monitor” or Wireless Display item. Sometimes this function is located in the "Screen" section.

So, if you are sure that your devices support the technology, start synchronizing. You only need two devices - a sender (phone, tablet, computer) and a receiver (TV, computer) of the video signal.
