With the iOS 11 update, Apple switched to new photo and video formats - HEIF and HEIC, respectively. The main feature of these formats is improved compression. Media files are compressed up to two times without losing quality. This means that photos and videos taken with an iPhone or iPad camera will take up half as much space in memory and iCloud cloud storage.

It is important to note that media files in the new formats are compatible with devices that do not support them. When you send or transfer photos and videos in HEIF and HEIC formats, they are automatically transcoded into readable formats for viewing on any device. "Do not disturb the driver"

iOS 11 introduces a new feature - Do Not Disturb the Driver. It silences all incoming notifications on the iPhone while the user is driving. When in active mode, the iPhone screen always remains dark, eliminating any chance of being distracted by it while driving. To activate a feature, you must first add it to Control Center. Do Not Disturb Driver mode can also be turned on automatically, provided that the iPhone has the ability to connect to the car system via Bluetooth.

AirPlay 2

iOS 11 debuts a new version of the second generation of AirPlay technology. The key innovation of AirPlay 2 is the ability to control multiple audio sources at once from an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 11. With AirPlay 2, users can select different songs to play in different rooms, while setting the desired volume for each audio source. Or you can play the song on several speakers simultaneously with perfect synchronization.

For iPhone photographers, the best news in iOS 11 is the ability to edit Live Photos, from changing the key frame to using fun effects that loop Live Photos or Bounce. iOS 11 brings more benefits to the iPhone 7+'s camera shutter, giving more control over the larger phone's second camera lens.

In addition to the regular wide-angle lens, the iPhone 7+ has a telephoto lens that provides 2x optical zoom and an additional camera setting called Portrait Mode that blurs the background to achieve a bokeh effect. Let's take a look at the new tricks created specifically for the second camera of the iPhone 7+.

Portrait mode is no longer permanent.

Just like you can go back and edit Live Photos using iOS 11, you can also edit photos taken in Portrait mode with blurred backgrounds. If you decide that your phone isn't using the depth effect quite right, or perhaps there are parts that are blurry that shouldn't be, then you can remove the depth effect completely.

To edit a photo in Portrait mode, open the photo, tap Edit, and then tap the yellow Depth button at the top. The blurred background will disappear and you can click the Depth button again to bring it back. Select the effect that looks best to you and click "Done" to save.

Note. You can only edit portrait mode photos taken after updating to iOS 11; you cannot do this on photos taken previously while you were using iOS 10.

With iOS 10, many camera features are disabled when shooting in Portrait mode. With iOS 11, you can get the quality depth effect you want and use flash, for example. Having a flash available when composing a photo in portrait mode is highly appreciated because its biggest drawback is poor quality in low light conditions. If your photo looks grainy in low light, turn on the flash and try again. Simply tap the lightning bolt in the top left corner and select Auto, On or Off.

HDR too.

With HDR (high dynamic range), the camera selects the best parts from three different exposures and combines them into one shot. This works wonders for straightening out photos that would otherwise have washed out bright and dark areas with no detail visible. And now you can use it in portrait mode! Just click the HDR button at the top and choose Auto, On or Off.

However, just like in normal photography mode, you must select flash or HDR, but you cannot use both at the same time.

Don't forget about filters.

Filters have also been added to portrait mode. Click the filter button in the top right corner and choose from nine Apple filters. Don't worry, you can always change or remove a filter by simply going to the Photos app and editing your pre-filtered photo.

This happens behind the scenes, but there's now optical image stabilization (OIS) to help stabilize your hand shake when shooting in Portrait mode. When using the 2x zoom on a telephoto lens in Proto mode, the camera is even more sensitive to movement, so always having OIS on is more beneficial here than in normal photo mode.

The final version of iOS 11 will be available simultaneously worldwide on September 19. In Ukraine, iOS will be released around 20:00, but some users will have the opportunity to download the operating system later, within a few hours. Before September 20, you are most likely to receive a message that the update is ready for download.

If you receive a message about updating to iOS 11 on time, be prepared to wait - millions of people around the world will try to do the same at the same time as you, so the download may take a long time. The update to iOS 11 weighs about 2 GB, and the servers will likely be overloaded.

iOS 11 design

There was no major update to the design of the operating system. Only a few elements of the iOS 11 interface have changed. In iOS 11, Apple designers switched to using bolder fonts, particularly in headings.

Some applications, such as Phone and Calculator, have received much more noticeable improvements, which can even be called a full-fledged redesign. But the Calendar and Reminders programs remained unchanged.

The updated Control Center in iOS 11 is a single screen, instead of the three separate ones offered in iOS 10. However, there has been no return to the days of iOS 9 - the Control Center has received a completely new look with round-shaped icons. The updated default menu includes two sections for regulating network options, music controls, sliders for changing volume and brightness, as well as several small buttons for locking rotation, and controlling the Do Not Disturb function.

Apple finally took pity on its users and gave them the ability to customize Control Center. Now you can install the necessary functions and applications, which will certainly make using your iPhone and iPad much more convenient.

Now the Control Center takes up the entire screen area. Thanks to this, the updated menu provides access to a noticeably wider range of functions, and users have the right to choose which ones to access.

"Center" itself on the iPad is exactly the same as on the iPhone. Menu items can be changed to suit your own needs, and if you hold for a long time, additional options appear.

iMessage and Apple Pay

In iOS 10, Apple introduced apps for Messages and even a separate App Store for iMessage. With iOS 11, the company decided to give users more convenient access to these features. Messages in iOS 11 introduces quick access to stickers, emoji, apps, and games that can be used by iMessage.

All you have to do to access them is swipe your finger across the program's pop-up panel, and the iMessage add-ons you need will appear in front of you.

In addition, iMessage in iOS 11 now has the ability to send payments between messenger users. Using the special Apple Pay application, iPhone and iPad owners can transfer money to each other using Apple's proprietary payment system. The money you receive is stored on your new Apple Pay Cash card, which doesn't appear in the Wallet app.

Important! Money transfers within the Apple Pay contactless payment service will become unavailable to users immediately after the release of iOS 11. The release of this function will occur later with the release of one of the planned operating system updates, probably iOS 11.1. In addition, the function will first work only in the United States.

In iOS 11, Apple switched to new photo and video formats – HEIF and HEIC, respectively. The main feature of these formats is improved compression. Multimedia is compressed up to two times without losing quality. This means that photos and videos taken with an iPhone or iPad camera will take up half as much space in memory and iCloud cloud storage.

The App Store has been completely redesigned. Despite the redesign, the main changes to the App Store in iOS 11 are contained within. After the update, the App Store greets users with five tabs:

Apple's proprietary voice assistant, Siri, has been updated with more realistic female and male voices that are much more similar to human ones. According to Apple executives, the new Siri voices were created using deep learning, which allowed for better pronunciation and a more expressive voice.

Siri's biggest innovation in iOS 11 is subtle. The voice assistant can learn on its own, and it learns directly on the device, without sending user data anywhere. Thanks to machine learning, Siri will be able to learn more about the user's interests, which will enable it to make better recommendations.

In iOS 11, users can ask Siri to translate text from English to Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Support for other languages ​​will be implemented in the coming months.

iCloud Drive
