It is unlikely that the great science fiction writers of past years expected that they would fail with a seemingly reliable topic -. Or rather, with the lack of the power that they unanimously predicted. But the tasks of the batteries, which we decided to test in the next annual examination, are much more mundane: to turn the starters and help the generators. This time we are checking the “Europeans”, which fit into the dimensions of 242 × 175 × 190 mm. Different manufacturers fit into this volume of over eight liters the declared capacities from 60 to 66 Ah. In total, we purchased 28 batteries in company stores: with receipts, guarantees, etc.

It remains to compare their actual power-to-weight ratio. This is where modern fantasy begins ...

Judge for yourself: the spread in the initial reserve capacity is 17-fold. The mass indicated on the label for some reason exceeds the true one by kilograms. And five batteries were afraid of the Russian frost of three dozen degrees!

No, science fiction writers were clearly optimists. But our numbers are real.

The measurements were carried out by specialists from the NIITs AT 3 of the Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Russia. The test results refer to a specific sample of batteries and are not general criteria for their quality.

HOW THE POINTS WERE ALLOCATED

According to the results of the measurements recorded in the protocol, points were assigned: in each type of test, the best and worst results were taken, assigning them 5 points and 1 point, respectively. All other participants received intermediate points according to the position they took between the leader and the outsider. For example, if when measuring the reserve capacity, the leader showed the result of 124 minutes, and the outsider - 81, then the participant with the result of 105 minutes received 3.23 points. And so - for all five types of tests. The final score is the arithmetic mean of five intermediate marks. We did not introduce weight coefficients that increase the significance of one parameter in relation to others: all parameters were recognized as equivalent. The figures given by us allow anyone who wishes to make their own calculations. It is clear that the arrangement of places in this case will definitely change.

Reserve capacity

Shows how long a car will last if the alternator has failed. The expert will say differently: in how many minutes the voltage at the terminals of a battery that delivers a current of 25 A to the load drops to 10.5 V. Measurements are carried out at a temperature of 25 ° C. The higher the score, the better.

The best result was shown by MULTI: 124 min.

Worst - avtoSil: 81 min.

Reduced starting energy with declared current

Characterizes the energy of the battery in the starting mode. The test is carried out at -18 °C. First, the battery is discharged with the declared cold scrolling current Ixn for 30 s, then the voltage U30 is recorded at its terminals. After a pause of 20 s, the battery is discharged with a current equal to 60% of the declared Ixp until the voltage at the terminals drops to 6.0 V. The discharge time t6 is recorded. The reduced starting energy is calculated by the formula:

Reduced single current starting energy

Allows you to compare the current characteristics of all batteries in the same conditions, regardless of their passport data. The test is carried out at -18 °C. First, the battery is discharged with a current of 450 A for 30 s and the voltage U30 is recorded at its terminals. After a pause of 20 seconds, the battery is discharged with a current of 270 A until the voltage at the terminals drops to 6.0 V. The discharge time t6 is recorded. The reduced starting energy is calculated by the formula:

QUESTION ANSWER

- Why do batteries, when tested, give out the declared current for so short a time? If the capacity is 60 Ah, then arithmetic suggests that a current of 600 A should be generated for approximately 0.1 hours, or 6 minutes. But the real count goes only for tens of seconds ...

The fact is that at this current, the battery capacity is no longer 60 Ah, but much less: about 20–25. The inscription "60 Ah" only says that for 20 hours at a temperature of 25 ºС you can discharge your battery with a current of 3 A (60:20), and no more. At the same time, at the end of the discharge, the voltage at the battery terminals should not fall below 10.5 V.

Estimating capacitance in ampere-hours is very inconvenient. And to measure it in these units is simply illiterate: the product of current and time does not give capacity, but the amount of electricity, which is otherwise called charge. The unit of quantity of electricity is the coulomb. 1 C = 1 A s. Accordingly, 1 Ah = 3600 C. The term “reserve capacity” is much clearer, showing how many minutes the battery will last on a car that has a failed generator.

- Is it true that when installing a battery with a larger capacity than the standard one, it will not be charged, and the starter will fail due to excessive current?

Not true. What will prevent the battery from being fully charged? Here's an analogy for you: if you scooped up a glass of water from a bucket or barrel, then to restore the initial level of liquid, you will need to add the same glass from the tap - both into the bucket and into the barrel. As for the expected breakdown of the starter, its current consumption will not change, even if the battery capacity increases by a hundred or thousand times. Ohm's law does not depend on ampere hours.

Talk about future breakdowns is only appropriate for extreme people who are used to getting out of the swamp on the starter. At the same time, the latter, of course, gets very hot, and therefore a low-capacity battery can save it from fatal overheating, dying first ... But this is a hypothetical case.

THE BATTERIES AT THE FACTORIES DO NOT REPORT LEAD. WHO IS GUILTY?

- Is it possible to assess the condition of the battery by the voltage at the terminals?

Approximately possible. At room temperature, a fully charged battery, disconnected from loads, should provide at least 12.6-12.7 V.

- What is hidden behind the term "calcium battery"?

The Ca (or even Ca-Ca) badge on batteries is increasingly present today. We are talking about very small (fractions or units of a percent) additions of calcium to the alloy from which the plates are made. If it is added to both positive and negative electrodes, then the same Ca-Ca is obtained. Such batteries, other things being equal, boil more difficultly, which is important for maintenance-free batteries. They also have less self-discharge during storage. Therefore, batteries with additives of traditional antimony (they are usually given out by the presence of traffic jams) are almost never found on sale today.

FIVE BATTERIES DID NOT RESIST THE FROST!

- Why choose a battery with a declared current, say, 600 A, if the real need is half as much?

The declared current is also an indirect indicator of the quality of the battery: the higher it is, the lower its internal resistance. In addition, in severe frost, the oil thickens and the current increases.

- Which is better - serviced batteries or maintenance-free?

Batteries that still have access to banks are gone. Such products - let's call them serviceable - are best suited for old machines with unstable mains voltage, in whose batteries the water can boil away. For a modern car, this is superfluous: they simply put a new battery under the hood and forget about it for several years. Note that in a new car, it doesn’t cost anything to ruin the battery in a week. Night winter starts, a full set of included energy consumers, short runs in traffic jams - under such conditions, it does not have time to recharge from the generator and slowly dies.

ECHO TEST

When launched with the command start test.bat will be fulfilled echo and the shell window will remain open, waiting for user input. This fact must be taken into account when using the command start in scenarios that run automatically without the intervention of a human operator. To close a window cmd after executing the batch file, it is enough to add the command to its end EXIT.
