Seven smartphones for those who are tired of plastic. Review of the LG G4 smartphone: genuine leather Phone with a leather back cover

Are you looking for a flagship smartphone running Android Lollipop with a removable battery and an expansion slot for SD cards, which was not found in the Samsung Galaxy S6? Then you should definitely pay attention to the LG G4, and by the way, its advantages do not end there.

LG says that everything in the new smartphone from the South Korean company is “at least a little” better than that of its main competitors from Samsung and Apple.

When you first look at the G4, especially with the plastic cover on the back, you can’t help but feel like it’s an LG G3; and all because there are no special physical differences between the two generations of smartphones, unlike this year’s Samsung and Apple smartphones. With a thickness of 76.1 mm, a height of 148.9 mm, and a quad-HD screen measuring 5.5 inches, the G4 stands out against the background of the S6 and iPhone 6. Like previous phones in the “G” line, the on/off and volume buttons are located on the back device According to LG representatives, the slight curves of the G4 body allow you to hold the smartphone in your hands with greater comfort and reliability.

LG G4 Review: New Flagship Smartphone from South Koreans

The LG flagship becomes noticeably more attractive when its back panel is clad in a handmade leather case. For now, leather cases are available in red and brown. It is worth noting that their production technology is identical to the production of expensive leather bags, and the main purpose is to protect the body from splashes and scratches. And although such a case does not provide 100% waterproofness, LG claims that it will protect the smartphone from moisture entering through the back panel for 30 minutes. In addition to the above colors, the manufacturer promises beige, blue and many other shades and designs for G4 cases.

Leather case protects the LG G4 from moisture and scratches

In our memory, before this there was only one smartphone with a back panel covered with genuine leather - Moto X, which undoubtedly sets the G4 apart from its main current competitors. LG emphasizes that leather is a much better conductor of heat than plastic, so the body of your smartphone will radiate pleasant heat throughout the entire body area, and not have “hot spots” during heavy load on its processor. Plus, with a leather back, your smartphone is less likely to slip out of your hands.

Screen and Camera LG G4

If you take a quick look at the G4's pixel specs, you'll inevitably wonder: "What's so special about a 2560 by 1440 pixel screen, a 16-megapixel rear camera, and an 8-megapixel front camera?"

We answer.

Firstly, the LG G4 screen became the world's first LCD smartphone screen using quantum dot technology, which is now actively used in the production of TV screens. Quantum dots are small crystals that can significantly improve the quality of transmitted colors. This technology first appeared in LG TVs, so it is not surprising that the first smartphone with this technology was also an LG product. The South Korean company claims that such crystals allow the G4 screen to transmit a higher-quality range of colors compared to the oversaturated colors of the Galaxy S6 AMOLED screen and the “dry” LCD iPhone 6.

Secondly, the camera has a larger sensor, an f/1.8 aperture, and a manual mode that allows you not only to set your own ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, but even to shoot in RAW format. Along with the phone, LG provides the user with its own software for quickly and easily transferring files to PCs and Macs - very good news for Mac owners, since at the moment the “Google” Android File Transfer software works with big “glitches” on machines Apple.

If we compare the G4 and S6 cameras, then, in our opinion, the colors of the photographs of the LG flagship look more saturated when shooting outdoors, while indoors the G4 shows better white balance, but loses to the S6 in image clarity.

Snapdragon 808 processor

The power in the G4 is provided by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, which is similar in its characteristics to the controversial 810 model installed in the LG G Flex 2, but has not four, but only two Cortex-A57 cores.

Let us recall that Qualcomm claimed that the Snapdragon 810 is an excellent processor that has no problems with overheating, but the fact remains: the first two devices equipped with this chip (G Flex 2 and HTC One M9) overheated very much, as evidenced by hundreds of complaints from disappointed customers, and the well-known English-language portal Ars Technica even more so suggested equipping the 810 model with a special “damper” for ventilation, “so that the processor does not boil itself.”

We were also able to test the G4 with the following Antutu, Sunspider and GFXBench benchmark tests. The Antutu benchmark score of 47,759 was very similar to the Snapdragon 805-equipped Galaxy Note Edge and better than the Snapdragon 810 chip in the G Flex 2. Quite acceptable. However, more importantly, in our opinion, the G4 remained far behind the Samsung Galaxy S6, which scored 69,797 points in the same test.

What about our graphics? When testing GFXBench, the G4 smartphone managed to get 9.4fps using the screen and 15fps without using it, the Galaxy S6 and G Flex 2 with the same benchmark were 15 and 22fps and 22 and 20fps, respectively. Ooh-Ahi. It turned out that the 808th LG G4 chip is not as strong in graphics as its main competitors.

One of the main trump cards of the G4, according to LG, is that it shows better responsiveness in working with applications than the S6. According to LG, their new flagship displays your photo folder faster, starts playing videos faster, launches the camera faster, and also switches from the rear to the front camera faster. At the same time, it is worth noting that the difference is tenths of a second, which is completely insignificant and hardly noticeable.

LG G4 Reviews

You will not find significant external differences from the previous smartphone in the “G” line - G3. This is especially felt when you see the new LG flagship without a leather case for the back panel.

In some ways, this is similar to comparing the iPad 3 and iPad 4. However, the “filling” has undergone changes. For example, the G3 was the first smartphone to feature a quad-HD screen, which was too much for the weaker Snapdragon 801 processor to handle.

Despite the fact that the G4 did not perform as well as we would like in graphics tests, the South Koreans still managed to significantly speed up the user interface and standard applications. Users will definitely notice this.

The leather back panel adds comfort. We're not a fan of wide smartphones, but for many users the G4's large (compared to the Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6) screen looks quite attractive. And in the end, LG managed to silence those dissatisfied people who constantly complained that it was impossible to remove the battery on flagship smartphones.

LG G4 – Release Date

LG G4 will hit store shelves in May 2015. The price of the smartphone has not yet been officially announced, but you don’t need to be smart to assume that it will be at the level of its main competitors.

For many shoppers, the words “inexpensive” and “premium” absolutely cannot go together. But the UHANS company is ready to destroy these stereotypes with its new fashion smartphone UHANS U100.

The design of the UHANS U 100 smartphone suggests that the creators of this device were clearly haunted by the glory of Vertu phones. Although, surprisingly, the manufacturer managed to create an original and stylish gadget that will emphasize the individuality of its owner. The body of this device is a harmonious combination of a metal frame, plastic inserts and seamless leather finishing on the back panel.

Adding sophistication to the UHANS U100 smartphone is a metal insert above the speaker grille, a strip of metal under the display with slots for an external speaker, and a hexagonal plate with a rear camera and LED flash. You even notice in this smartphone the screws and rivets, as well as the V-shaped red line on the plate under the camera, which do not seem at all out of place here, but on the contrary add a sense of style to the appearance of the device.

In general, you can enjoy the appearance of the UHANS U100 smartphone for a long time, but you should not forget about the technical part of this device. And it is represented by a 4-core 64-bit processor MT6735 with a clock frequency of 1.3 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. The display diagonal of this smartphone is 4.7 inches and its resolution is 720p. On board the device there is also a slot for Micro-SD memory cards up to 64 GB, which is located under the removable back cover of the case. The battery capacity of the UHANS U100 smartphone is 2200 mAh, and the built-in cameras have a resolution of 13 MP and 5 MP. Thus, in terms of technical equipment, this device is a typical representative of the budget class of smartphones.

The UHANS U100 smartphone is available in black body color and black leather finish on the back cover. The thickness of the device is 9.15 mm, and the weight is 159 grams. The new product will run on the Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system with support for all popular smart functions. But the most impressive thing about the UHANS U100 smartphone is its price. You can pre-order this device on the Geekbuying online store for $119.99. And this is an amazingly low price for a smartphone with a premium look! So, hurry up and make your decision as the pre-sale will last until October 10th.

UHANS is a little-known manufacturer from China, but their new product is already on the tip of many people’s tongues. They have released a new smartphone called UHANS U100, which has quite good characteristics and a pretty good design. The phone body is made of leather and metal and looks very stylish and expensive. Although the cost of the model itself is not so high.

UHANS U100 includes a 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 720p pixels, equipped with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass. The smartphone has a quad-core MediaTek MT6735 processor with a frequency of 1.3 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory with the ability to expand it using a memory card.

The phone comes with the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system. As for the cameras, the U100 has a 13MP main camera with LED flash and a 5MP front camera. Both cameras can take FHD, 30fps photos. U100 also supports FDD LTE/4G/3G/GPS/WiFi and Bluetooth.

The U100 is equipped with an Off-Screen Gesture feature that allows users to launch apps quickly or perform an action while the device is locked. Simply draw predefined shapes or writing on the screen when the display is off, and the phone will turn on the app or task you need.

UHANS U100 has a 2200 mAh battery, which will allow you to enjoy the device throughout the day of constant use. The battery will take less time to charge as it is a relatively small battery compared to other phones in a similar price range.

All things considered, this is a pretty decent phone at an affordable price of $119.99.

Hi all. Today I would like to talk about such an unusual smartphone as the LG G4. Until recently, it was the flagship of the Korean manufacturer, the V10 took the palm. LG G4 has one unique feature, namely the back cover of the smartphone is made of genuine leather.

PACKAGE

The packaging of this smartphone in appearance does not give away that there is a top-end and expensive smartphone inside.

A small rectangular box made of white cardboard. On the front side is the name of the smartphone in gold letters.

The base of the box is red. As always, you can read brief technical information on the back.

A transport film is stuck on the smartphone screen.

The device itself was made in South Korea, perhaps for some this will be a big plus.

For a flagship, the scope of delivery is quite meager.

APPEARANCE

First of all, the G4 surprises with its back cover. Of course, the lid itself is plastic, but covered with genuine leather. They say that young virgins tan the leather by hand and fit the lids on it.

Leather is certainly a cool material, but impractical. If you take a smartphone with wet hands, marks will remain on the skin. Dirty hands, same result. The skin itself simply perfectly absorbs dirt and oil from the hands. In addition, various damage appears on the skin quite quickly.

There is a stitch of thread running right down the center of the back cover, which adds more elegance to this smartphone.

It is noteworthy that men do not particularly react to the leather cover, but the female gender shows genuine interest in the product. By the way, if you buy such a lid separately, you will have to shell out 5 thousand rubles.

Leather is a delicate material and requires protection. I purchased a transparent silicone cover.

The smartphone body is made entirely of plastic. It’s strange to see this in a smartphone for 39 thousand rubles. No metal was delivered this time.

In general, holding a smartphone in your hands is very pleasant; you feel that the thing is expensive.

The screen of the smartphone is slightly curved, of course not as much as that of the G Flex line, but if you put the smartphone screen down, you can see the gap between the table and the screen.

The back cover is sloping, the bend is quite clearly visible.

The build quality is excellent. Absolutely nothing to complain about. LG G4 is one of the few top-end smartphones where we have a removable back cover, a removable battery, two full-fledged slots for SIM cards, and not a stupid combined tray for SIM cards and memory cards. Of course there is support for external memory cards.

CONTROLS

Let's look at the layout of the controls.

At the top end there is a hole for the first microphone and an IR transmitter.

There are no controls on the right and left sides. On the right side there is only a small recess for removing the back cover.

A micro USB connector is on the bottom, there is also a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a second microphone hole.

On the back side is the main camera, on the right side of the camera is a laser rangefinder sensor, on the left side is an LED flash. The traditional volume button and power button have moved to the back of the smartphone. On the one hand, the solution is ambiguous, but on the other hand, it’s convenient once you get used to it, but this takes time.

At the bottom there is a speaker for calling and the name of the smartphone.

On the front side: status indicator, proximity sensor, automatic brightness control sensor, earpiece.

At the bottom is the manufacturer's logo. The touch control buttons were placed on the screen, I don’t like this approach, despite the fact that the lower part of the frame is quite wide and could easily accommodate the buttons themselves. Another touch button has appeared in the form of a schematic display of SIM cards. The solution is quite convenient and allows us to literally switch between SIM cards on the fly.

SCREEN

LG G4 is equipped with an IPS matrix for 10 touches and without an air gap.

There is a protective glass in the shape of a fourth gorilla. Gorgeous oleophobic coating, your finger glides across the screen just perfectly and there are practically no fingerprints left.

LG gave the big name “Quantum” to its display. As for me, the name is purely marketing and does not mean anything to the end user. Color rendition has been improved by 20%, brightness by 25% and contrast by 50%, but compared to what?

The screen dimensions are 5.5 inches, resolution - 2560×1440 pixels. The pixel density is 534 dots per inch; individual pixels on the screen are impossible to see even under a magnifying glass. Personally, I think that 2k resolution screens in smartphones are a fad, a waste of computing resources and battery power. This resolution is more suitable for tablet PCs.

There is automatic brightness adjustment. By double tapping on the screen you can unlock your smartphone and vice versa, the function works perfectly.

Well, traditionally, we’ll look at the screen settings in more detail.

Almost perfect gamma curves.

But the color channels are quite chaotic.

Color temperature is not ideal. The colors on the screen are too cold.

Huge spread according to the sRGB standard. There may be problems with natural color reproduction.

In general, the screen of the LG G4 does not cause such a “wow!” effect. This is due to the low quality of color rendering. For a top-end smartphone, such indicators look quite strange. However, the average user will not notice these moments in the screen settings.

CAMERA

The main 16-megapixel has a module with an f/1.8 aperture and a 1/2.6 matrix. There is an optical image stabilization system OIS 2.0, operating on three axes, and a dual LED flash. The main feature of the camera is laser autofocus with a very fast response time.

The camera settings are quite easy to learn, even a child can figure it out. The “manual setting” mode deserves more attention. You can independently: control focus, shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation, white balance.

In addition to JPEG, you can now save photos in RAW format.

The quality of photographic material can be assessed using these images as an example. To be honest, the camera didn’t particularly surprise me in terms of shooting quality. The pictures are of good quality and are no different from other flagships.

The camera can shoot video in a maximum resolution of 4K. Below are several videos in different resolutions.

The front camera in the LG G4 has an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. You can use gestures and voice commands to control shooting. In addition, you can release the shutter using a button on the rear panel, which is quite convenient. In general, the front camera in the G4 is one of its strengths.

Video from the front camera can be shot “only” in 1080p at 30 frames per second, and nothing more is needed.

SOFT

I wanted to write a review of this smartphone a long time ago, but decided to wait for the right moment. The right moment was that LG promised to release an update to Android OS 6.0 back in November, but it didn’t work out... Actually, I wanted to talk about this update, but LG stated that the G4 would be the first to receive the update to 6.0. Update 6.0 for the G4 was released, but only in Poland, and that was the end of it. The firmware turned out to be very buggy, namely, the battery charge “leaked” in literally 2 hours. As a result, the firmware was recalled and they said that they would release it when all the problems were fixed. Finally, when will the corrected firmware be released? Oh, no one knows and it’s sad!

The smartphone continues to run Android OS 5.1. Naturally, the firmware can be updated over the air.

The main menu is presented in a non-standard 5x5 layout.

I’ll say right away that the smartphone’s firmware is overloaded with various settings and applications. It’s quite difficult to just figure out what’s what, I’ll only talk about the most significant applications.

The status indicator can be assigned to different operating modes.

I would like to note the built-in file manager, which shows the total amount of memory, as well as memory divided into categories.

The smartphone has a full-fledged infrared port. You can control any equipment in the house using your smartphone.

There is a notepad with handwriting support.

LG SmartWorld. A proprietary application for customizing your smartphone. Through this application, you can download various home screen themes, third-party applications, etc.

The background images are nothing special.

When unlocking your smartphone, you can choose one of five graphic effects.

You can change the combination of touch buttons.

There are 6 different font types to choose from, with a choice of sizes.

The volume button can be assigned to launch the camera or notepad. Strange, but no other application can be assigned to the buttons.

You can separately change the screen theme. Also, various themes can be downloaded from the company's application store.

IN WORK

The heart of the new LG G4 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808, a representative of the new generation of mobile processors with support for 64-bit instructions. In this case, two fast Cortex-A57 cores (up to 2.0 GHz) and 4 energy-efficient Cortex-A53 cores (up to 1.5 GHz) are used. As a full-fledged system-on-chip (SoC), the Snapdragon 808 is equipped with integrated Adreno 418 graphics, an LPDDR3-1866 memory controller, as well as various communication modules, in particular, Wi-Fi (802.11ac + MIMO), Bluetooth 4.1, UMTS and LTE .

The LG G4 did not install the 810 Snapdragon, citing the fact that the latter is prone to overheating. From personal experience I can say that the 808 model also heats up quite significantly.

The performance of this processor is sufficient for any application, even at 2k resolution. Here is the data obtained in synthetic tests.

The tested games ran at full graphics settings without any performance issues.

The RAM in the smartphone is 3GB. When downloading, we will have more than 1.2GB left. This is more than enough for stable operation of the smartphone.

Permanent built-in memory 32GB. The system will leave only 20GB for the user’s needs. The rest of the memory went to the firmware and installed applications.

Micro SDXC memory cards are supported, the 128GB card itself worked perfectly. You cannot install applications on a memory card.

I would like to note the cool sound from the main speaker. Although the speaker itself is small, the sound it produces is very loud and clear, it even pumps up the bass...

Of course, support for two SIM cards is implemented. Micro SIM card format. There is only one radio module, you can access the network via 4G only from the first SIM card.

You can assign call forwarding to the second or first SIM card. You can assign your own melody to each SIM card. You can also assign your own melody to each individual contact. The sound of the speaker is loud, two active microphones perfectly filter external interference, speech transmission is at a very high level.

I was pleased with the very powerful vibration.

AUTONOMOUS OPERATION

The battery capacity is 3000 mAh. For a smartphone with a 2k screen and high performance, this is, let’s say, not much...

Here's what happened in terms of autonomous operation.

1. Gaming applications in 3D format – 5 hours

2. Watching video with a resolution of 1080p – 6 hours.

3. Economy mode use, this is a small number of calls and SMS messages - 3 days.

4. Long time talking and a large number of different messages – 1.5 days.

In any case, if you actively use it, be prepared to charge your smartphone every day.

CONCLUSIONS

The LG G4 is sort of the last of a dying race. The smartphone has full support for two SIM cards and a separate memory card. Let me remind you that the latest flagship models from third-party manufacturers do not support memory cards at all or have a stupid combined slot/tray for a memory card or SIM card. The price of a smartphone at the end of 2015 increased and amounted to 39 thousand rubles, a little expensive... There are a lot of competitors: Asus ZenFone 2, HTC One E9+ DS, Samsung SM-G920 Galaxy S6 Duos, ZTE Axon mini 32 GB. As you can see, the choice is quite large and often difficult.

PROS:

1. Excellent workmanship.

2. Unusual leather cover.

3. Good camera.

4. Availability of 2 SIM cards and a memory card.

5. High performance.

6. Availability of an IR transmitter.

MINUSES:

1. High price.

2. The screen needs additional calibration.

That's all. Thank you all very much for your attention.

Good luck and Happy New Year!
