It is known that the sizes of sheet formats A0, A1, A2, A3 and A4 to A10 correspond to the approved Russian standard - GOST 2.301-68.

These formats are not changing. In addition to the Russian Federation, these dimensions are also fixed by international standards. I must say that this is very convenient, of course, because documents are used everywhere.

In addition to formats and sizes, paper is divided into a number of series. There are three of them: A, B and C. This division corresponds to international ISO standards.

• Series A paper Mainly used for documents. For example, in Russia, A4 paper format is used to prepare various documents.

Standard paper sizes have varied at different times in different countries. Today the following are mainly used:

The ISO 216 standard was created in 1975 from the German DIN 476 standard and defined the A and B series of paper sizes. The standard is based on the metric system and is based on the format of a 1 m² sheet of paper. The standard has been adopted by all countries except the USA and Canada.

Over the years, different countries have maintained standards for different paper sizes.

Currently only two systems are in use. Size a5 is international. It is the most common system used throughout the world. It was developed in France in 1798 and supplemented by German scientists in 1922.

Standards

The dimensions of an A5 sheet are laid down by the international standard ISO 216, which is based on the metric system of measures. The aspect ratio is equal to the square root of two and looks like 1:√2, which when calculated is approximately 1:1.4200. This ratio is very convenient to use, so it is used all over the world.

Most The large sheet size of this A0 series has an area of ​​1 m 2 . Dividing it in half, we get two A1s that will have the same aspect ratio. This means that A5 is subject to the same pattern of length and width. If you attach two sheets of this format, you will get A4.

In centimeters and millimeters

A5 sizes in centimeters and millimeters are the main measurement in most countries. Used in relation to paper documents. It is just as convenient to use A5 size in cm as in millimeters. The ratio of this format in centimeters is 14.8 × 21 cm. A5 dimensions in mm are 148 × 210.

In inches

This unit of measurement is more often used in the North American Standard System. In domestic use it is quite rare. The size in inches is 5.83 x 8.27.

In pixels and points

The size of A5 in pixels depends on the resolution. With better quality it will be larger than with standard quality. If the file is intended for printing at a dpi of 300 dpi, then the graphic dimensions will be 1748 x 2480. Used in glossy magazines. With a standard resolution of 72 pixels per inch, this format will be 420 x 595.

Points are usually used in domestic printing. There are approximately 48 of them in one square. A5 sheet corresponds to an approximate value of 420 x 595 pt.

Application of A5 format

This type of format is not very common in use. But, nevertheless, it also finds its areas of application.

On paper

Using A5 paper size is most suitable for producing leaflets that need to cover a lot of information. In addition, the production of notebooks and notebooks is considered very common. Also ideal for short-run bound brochures that later need to be printed on a printer or photocopier.

In MS Word

In Word, A4 is considered the standard document. But if necessary, you can use other formats. To change an A4 sheet to an A5 sheet in Word, you must perform the following steps:

expand the “Page Settings” or “Advanced Settings” window using the arrow in the lower right corner;

To begin with, it is important to understand one simple thing - it is impossible to convert the linear dimensions of a paper sheet into pixels without additional data for the following reason:

Linear dimensions (mm, cm) do not take into account such characteristics as image quality. The quality of the picture is determined by the number of dots per unit area. You can make a pixel 1 square mm in size, then the A4 sheet will be equal to 297x210 pixels (this is an example that does not meet the standards, in reality there are generally accepted standards).

Image quality is usually measured in dots per square inch (DPI). 1 inch is equal to 25.4 mm.

Standard DPI sizes used in printing:

• 75 is suitable for documents with text;
• 150 is the minimum for printing photographs;
• 300 – optimal quality for printing pictures;

Let's look at examples of how all this is calculated. When we have quality data, we can put everything together and calculate how many pixels will fit into our A4 (297x210 mm).

Calculation of A4 size in pixels at 150 dpi

• height – 297*150/25.4=1754 px
• width – 210*150/25.4=1240 px

Calculation of A4 size in pixels at 300 dpi

• height – 297*300/25.4=3508 px
• width – 210*300/25.4=2480 px

If the original image initially has a smaller number of pixels, you can still print it on A4 sheet, but you must understand that clarity will suffer. To minimize the negative effect when printing in such situations, try to apply multiple resizing (2, 4, 8, etc. times).

First of all, it should be noted that the paper size is the standardized size of a paper sheet. Today, in different regions and countries of the world, there are several systems using completely different formats. However, only two dominate positions, namely: international, using the A4 standard and related formats, and North American.

The international system of standards, using paper format A3, A4, etc., is usually based on the metric system of measures. It comes from the sheet format, which has an area of ​​1 square meter - size A0. The height and length of such paper in the standard version are 1189 and 841 mm. respectively, and in inches this value is 46.8 and 33.1, respectively.

The international standard ISO 216, which has become widespread in many countries around the world these days, includes three series of formats. One of them is series A, the other two are B and C. The latter consists of envelope formats designed for sheets belonging to series A - the sizes in this case are approximately 7-8.5 percent larger. Next, you can familiarize yourself with the sizes of paper in several formats, in particular, you will find out the A3 size:

• So, if you have a question like “how much is a1 format?”, then you should say that the size of paper of this format in mm is 841 × 594, and in inches – 33.1 × 23.4.
• The height and length of the A2 format are 594 and 420 mm, respectively. To convert these values ​​into more familiar centimeters, they need to be divided by 10.
• A3 paper size is 420×297 mm. This value translated into centimeters is equal to 4.2 × 2.97 cm. If we convert it into pixels for an image density of 300 dpi, then the A3 size will be equal to 4961 × 3508 pixels.
• The A4 format, which is widely used, has a height of 297 and a length of 210 mm. Half of an A4 sheet is equal to an A5 sheet, the size of which is 210x148. To verify this, it is enough to obtain the area of ​​both sheets and compare it with each other: in the first case it is equal to 62370 mm2, and in the second – 31080 mm2. Next, divide the first value by the second and get an approximate ratio of 2 to 1, i.e. One A4 sheet can accommodate two A5 sheets.
• It should also be added that users often wonder what the 10x15 paper format is called. This sheet size is closest to the A6 format, the height of which is 148 mm and the length is 105 mm. – if you round both data values, you get approximately 10x15 cm.
