Introduction

Not long ago, a device from the BQ company called Amsterdam appeared on the Russian market. It should be noted that all the names of devices from this company are geographical, for example, just the other day we had two devices for review - Los Angeles and Monte Carlo.

The BQ Amsterdam smartphone now costs just under 7,000 rubles and offers the user a large 5.5-inch IPS screen with HD resolution, a simple 4-core chipset from MediaTek, only 1 GB of RAM, but a 2500 mAh battery capacity sufficient for such a gadget.

Design, dimensions, control elements

In previous reviews, I have already said that smartphones and other devices from BQ, one way or another, copy the design of famous brands. If in the case of Los Angeles and Monte Carlo tracings of Samsung, HTC and Doogee were used, then the Amsterdam gadget is a typical Apple iPhone clone, and not entirely successful. Eldar Murtazin not long ago talked about a fake iPhone: it cost a penny, but it was made in such a way that some of our editorial staff did not understand the trick when they were shown the supposedly Apple phone. This definitely won’t happen with BQ Amsterdam: the device resembles an iPhone only in some details. Whether this is good or bad, apparently, is for potential buyers to judge.

The body is made entirely of plastic and has three colors: gold (white front panel, gold lid), black (the front part is the same color) and silver (black plus silver). The plastic is simple, the quality is average, like children's toys. The cover of the device is dark-colored - soft-touch, the rest is semi-glossy plastic.

The dimensions for a 5.5-inch smartphone are rather large - 157x78x9 mm, and the gadget weighs as if it were made of metal - almost 200 grams. It fits well in the hand due to the sloping edges and smooth body shape. If your hands are wet (especially true now, in the summer, at 9 degrees Celsius and light rain), then the phone may slip out, it would be better if it had a case...

The assembly is excellent: nothing creaks or plays, the rear area does not press down to the battery. I think that over time the paint on the gold BQ will peel off, exposing the white plastic.

The screen is protected by tempered glass (the manufacturer does not provide detailed data), however, when you buy the device, a protective film will already be glued to it. I tested Amsterdam without it. The display is equipped with a relatively effective oleophobic coating: fingerprints remain, but are practically invisible and quickly erased; the finger glides easily.

On the top of the front panel there is a camera, sensors and a speaker. It is loud, the interlocutor is not heard very clearly and intelligibly, the timbre is mumbling, and the speaker wheezes when there are loud sounds from the interlocutor.

Below the display are standard Android touch buttons; there is no backlight.

At the bottom there is a microphone and speakerphone, at the top there is a microUSB and a 3.5 mm jack. On the left are two separate buttons for volume control. They are convex and can be easily felt with your fingers. On the right is the power button. The location of the keys, it seemed to me, was unfortunate - too high: every time you lock the screen you have to move the phone down the palm.

On the reverse side there is a camera recessed into the body, a flash, and a red BQ logo.

The cover is removable, as is the battery. Under the socket are two slots for micro SIM cards and a slot for installing a microSD memory card.

BQ Amsterdam, Monte Carlo and Los Angeles

Display

This device uses a screen with a diagonal of 5.5 inches. Physical size – 68x121 mm, frame on top – 17 mm, bottom – 20 mm, on the right and left – approximately 4.5 mm. There is an anti-reflective coating, which is quite effective.

The Amsterdam display resolution from BQ is HD, that is, 1280x720 pixels, aspect ratio is 16:9, density is 267 pixels per inch. IPS matrix with air gap.

The viewing angles of the screen are maximum; when tilted, the picture fades slightly. If you look at the display, tilting the phone away from you, you will notice the backlight of the matrix, which is not very good. In general, the backlight is uneven, in some places white spots are visible (dark picture).

The maximum brightness of white color is 280 cd/m2, the maximum brightness of black color is 0.62 cd/m2, contrast is 500:1.

In the light the image is practically invisible, in the shadows it is more or less normal.

Viewing angles

Batteries

This device uses a replaceable battery (lithium-ion) 2500 mAh.

In my operating mode (infrequent calls and mostly Wi-Fi and 3G), the smartphone “lived” from about 9 am until late at night (up to an hour or two). In this mode, I listen to music for about 2 hours, the screen lights up for about 3-4 hours. Video playback is about 7-8 hours.

If we are talking about listening to music, then this can be neglected, since the 2500 mAh battery drains by about 3-5% per hour at medium volume: the battery will drain faster in standby mode. Toys - about 2 hours.

Using a standard AC adapter, the battery is charged within 3 hours 20 minutes.

Communication capabilities

The device only works in 2G/3G networks (GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, WCDMA 900/2100 MHz): slot 1 – 2G/3G, slot 2 – 2G.

The rest is standard for any Android smartphone: Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0 without OTG support. Amsterdam has obvious problems with GPS: the gadget has difficulty finding satellites even in a few minutes.

Memory and memory card

Inside there is 1 GB of RAM, usually about 400 MB free. Built-in memory 8 GB, about 5 GB available. There is a slot for a microSD memory card, the maximum capacity is 32 GB.

Cameras

Traditionally, there are two camera modules: 13 MP (F2.2 aperture) and 5 MP (F2.8 aperture). There is one LED flash.

For a device costing less than 7,000 rubles, the BQ Amsterdam shoots quite well, macro shots or portrait shots come out especially well. The landscapes are somewhat soapy. There is little noise, the picture is pleasant, the sharpness is adequate, the dynamic range is average. Focus is not fast, but accurate.

The front camera is not the best (it will do for a budget device), artifacts are noticeable (apparently, post-processing is in progress - sharpening), characteristic of Sony modules.

The smartphone records videos in FullHD resolution, the number of frames is 30. The quality is more HD-like. Focus is achieved with this. The selfie camera also records FullHD, but at 20 FPS, the quality is good.

Sample photos

Performance

The BQ Amsterdam model uses a chipset from the Taiwanese company MediaTek - MT6580: 4 cores, ARM Cortex-A7, process technology - 28 nm, core frequency - up to 1.3 GHz, graphics - MALI-400. By the way, a similar processor is installed in BQ Los Angeles.

The smartphone does not slow down or glitch; no microlags were detected. All games run, but at low or medium settings. It happens that games are missing some textures. In general, you shouldn’t expect anything different from a budget chip.

Cons: The speaker is not very good, but nowadays no one listens to music through it anymore. After half a year, the lock and volume buttons began to stick. It began to constantly freeze and lag.
Review: Switched to it from Expla Rio Play. The difference is stunning. For social networks and games the phone fits perfectly. Only the battery heats up. As a photographer, the main camera was very important to me. The quality of the photos is excellent! The lags became upset after a short period of use (only 6 months, judge for yourself). In general, I do not recommend it for long-term use. Not even a year has passed and I'll have to get a new one. I think you can find something better for the same price.

Pros: Good camera for its price, decent screen, overall decent device
Cons: The battery may hold up normally at first, but after half a year it holds very weakly, the main disadvantage is the accessories, this phone was smashed to pieces, and there are simply no matrices and other parts for this phone, so you need to get a new phone. And of course, a very quiet speaker, even for its price.
Review: You can take it, but you should expect a deterioration in some parameters.

Pros: I really liked the phone. Price and quality are excellent. The design of the device is very elegant and attractive. You can feel that the materials used to make the phone are not cheap. It fits very comfortably in the hand. As for the work, everything is also on top. Sensitive sensor. The colors are very rich and bright. There are a lot of flowers. Photographs beautifully. Even if you display a photo on a large screen, there are no complaints. After all, the camera is 13 megapixels. If you need a phone for gaming and watching movies and it's not expensive. I think that's it. 5.5 inches IP screen. A friend bought a much more expensive phone with approximately the same characteristics. He likes mine better). Amsterdam and the net catches fish better than......... and takes better pictures. Overall I'm very pleased with the phone. I recommend it. You won't want to
Cons: didn't find any.

Pros: I have been using the phone relatively recently, I really like the phone. They offered it in the store as a good alternative to a more expensive brand, the functions are approximately the same, I am grateful to the employee who recommended it to me. Satisfied with everything
13 megapixel camera, the photos are clear, the image quality is satisfactory even at night. An impressive 5.5 IPS screen with 2.5 D technology can even display movies on the screen, the size is quite satisfactory, the 2500 mAh battery holds a charge for a day. It responds quickly, the Internet works well, does not slow down, does not freeze. I personally recommend it. Optimal price, quality, characteristics.
Cons: I didn’t find any disadvantages

Pros: The large screen is the main advantage of the smartphone. Also, the brightness of the screen was very surprising, since competitors in this price category are not particularly bright and color rendition. Another main feature was the camera of the device, which really corresponds to what is advertised and even in the dark it takes very good pictures. It also handles games very well; for example, it copes with asphalt quite well. And if you play simpler ones, he can handle them with 5+. The screen also responds very well to touch even in the cold. For this price category, I think the phone is completely worth the money!
Cons: I didn’t find any shortcomings during a month of use. Regarding the battery, well, here in all smartphones, with maximum use, the phone does not last long, be it even a Samsung that costs 40 mowers)

Cons: I didn’t find any cons!
Review: The design is attractive, the screen is large and protected by tempered curved glass, which does not scratch, and it looks cool, the screen is also covered with a high-quality protective film, which keeps the rather large screen in excellent shape. The battery has a good capacity - 2500 mAh, does its job perfectly, is enough for a working day with active use, and this includes the Internet and video. The camera is clear and focusing allows you to take cool pictures and videos, and the front camera with its quality does not leave you indifferent to the selfies you take. Very fast quad core processor. And a big plus to everything is the build quality and the low price, which makes me happy. A stylish and elegant smartphone at a very reasonable price!

Pros: A fairly large display with a diagonal of “5.5”, you can watch movies, TV series and much more in full screen (my small laptop), I use it as a portable computer, because it is not convenient to carry a bandura with me due to private business trips in RUSSIA and Europe , the 13 megapixel camera helps out both in working moments and outside, since the pictures taken from it are incomparable, you can also print them and the quality will be at its best! This model combines amazing capabilities of shooting modes (panoramic, night, portrait mode) that will give you goosebumps.
Cons: I would like more battery capacity

Pros: The design is cool, you wouldn’t think there is a cover, but there is one. Pleasant color rendition. During use it did not slow down or glitch. The speaker is of average volume. The viewing angles of the screen are maximum; when tilted, the picture fades slightly.

Pros: price, large screen, battery, camera, design
Review: The price matches the quality. I was immediately attracted by the design, the screen is large and protected by tempered curved glass, which does not scratch, and it looks cool. The battery has a large capacity, copes with its task perfectly, and is enough for a working day with active use, and this includes the Internet and video. The camera is clear and focusing allows you to take cool pictures and videos, and the front camera with its quality did not leave me indifferent to the selfies taken. The smartphone itself looks elegant and premium for the price.

Pros: An excellent smartphone that will please both beginners and experienced users, as it is easy to use and fits well in the hand. At the same time, it has a 5.5-inch IPS bright display with 2.5 D technology. A very excellent 13 megapixel camera that transmits the entire spectrum of colors. A very capacious 2500 mAh battery, with which there is no fear of forgetting to charge at home as it lasts for a very long time. Two SIM cards, and a not bad and very fast quad-core processor. And a big plus to everything is the build quality and the low price, which makes me happy.

Pros: Hello everyone! Two weeks ago I bought myself a new smartphone, and now I’ve tried it out. The wishes were:

Big screen
Good camera
Lots of memory
And all in a budget option
The seller immediately offered Amsterdam.
Priced at only RUR 6,890!!
The model is presented in classic colors. The factory protective film is immediately applied.
According to the manufacturer, the smartphone is comparable in capabilities to a personal computer.
This is what I personally verified.
Operating system Android 5.1. More comfortable for me than 6.0
The wallpaper is probably Amsterdam) very beautiful.
Yandex with voice search is immediately connected
Two SIM cards, a memory card up to 32 GB, and 1 GB of RAM, built-in 8. As one knowledgeable person told me, “you don’t need more.”
In general, I'm satisfied)
Cons: I haven’t noticed any drawbacks yet. I advise you to buy it, you won’t regret it)

Cons: Very quiet speaker, if you are on the street you may not hear the call.
Review: I used it for about a year, for the price I was more than happy with it, but something bad happened, my wife dropped the phone, surprisingly the display remained intact, a piece of plastic near the camera broke off. I started looking for glass, but I couldn’t find it in Novosibirsk, I ordered it from Ali, when the glass was disconnected, the technician damaged the display itself, I had to order a new one, again from Ali.
It’s bad that even the official service center cannot change the display; repairs are only under warranty.

Pros: - Large screen with acceptable HD resolution
- Not easily soiled case
- Does not overheat
Cons: - Terrible camera (takes pictures normally only in good light). If there is not enough light, the photos are very dark (even though you take pictures during the day). When using a flash, the shooting is late, that is, the flash has fired and the light has already gone off, and only after that the photo is captured. What's the point of flash and camera working like this? Before this I had an LG (D686) also in this budget - but the camera took much better pictures. Just “heaven” and “earth” compared to this BQ.
- Insufficient battery capacity. The smartphone “devours” it very quickly, again comparing it with the LG D686 - it holds almost twice as bad, although the battery capacity of LG was not twice as large (3150 mAh)
- There are sudden, causeless phone reboots. Very rare, but they do happen. Not much pleasant.
Review: Before this smartphone, I spent two years with the LG D686, which I really liked (lightweight with an excellent camera and a good battery, a bright display and balanced characteristics) - but at one point it “died”, as it turned out, the memory chip “died”. Repair is not advisable.
As usual, no one was planning the upcoming financial expenses for purchasing a smartphone, so they started looking for a budget option with acceptable characteristics and more or less adequate reviews. I came across BQS-5505 Amsterdam, read it and went and bought it that same day.
And although this phone has many disadvantages, I catch myself thinking that if now I was given the opportunity to choose a budget smart again, I would most likely choose it again :(

Now, if I had a little more money at that time, it would have been a completely different story)))) And with this money (up to 6 thousand rubles) there aren’t really any other options).
If you are on a limited budget, then purchase this device; you most likely will not find a better one.

Pros: - Price!
- Appearance
- Large screen, bright rich colors.
- Camera
Cons: - Battery drains quickly
Review: I bought it in August for 6,000 rubles. For such a price, it looks just great in appearance, just right for a man’s hand (for a woman’s hand it will probably be too bulky and heavy). Large screen diagonal 5.5, bright colors, although it is still difficult to see in the sun. Normal speaker, 50% of everything can be heard perfectly. Installed applications do not slow down and open quickly.

The only negative is that the battery drains catastrophically quickly, even with all the energy saving settings turned on! And I’m not playing on my phone yet, I’m not watching videos - 10 minutes scroll through the VKontakte wall, write a couple of messages, check your email - and 15-20% of the charge is gone! Considering that the description for the phone stated up to 6 hours of video viewing... well, yes, of course :)) So here you either constantly carry a charger with you or an external battery.

If you like to play on your phone, watch videos, read on the go - and at the same time do not carry an additional battery with you, then it is better to take a closer look at other smartphones.
If you just need to make a call, check your email, browse social networks, take a few photos on Instagram and search for something on the Internet, this is a completely suitable device, enough for a working day.

Review: The handset is gorgeous, especially considering its price! Nothing slows down, doesn’t glitch, everything works clearly, the screen is brilliant! I bought three of these handsets for myself and gave another one to my aunt. You can’t find a better handset under 10k. But for me it’s generally the same There is no better one, because... it performs all the functions that I need and costs pennies! I bought the first device new for 4500 rubles, the second one did the same, the third one I bought used. for 3000. My aunt bought it for 5000. In general, I want to say that there are two different assemblies and they differ from each other in appearance and quality, even the box is different. In general, take only the one with the small red BQ icon on the bottom, those with which have a large BQ inscription in the middle, they are buggy, apparently affected by the assembly.

Pros: The screen is large - visible in the sun during the day, bright, the phone is fast, fits well in the hand. Easy to read, battery lasts 1-2 days.
Cons: - GPS navigation is rather weak, when used in conjunction with a cellular connection - sometimes it falls off and gets lost (somehow at the most inopportune moment), and the Yandex navigator does not work on it - some problems and glitches;
- the speaker is quiet - if you’re in a car, you can miss a call, if you play the video on the street, you won’t be able to hear it;
- and when updating over the air - it turned into a brick - it was returned under warranty - I thought it was a common problem, but no - only mine is visible.
Review: I used it for about 2-3 months - overall I am very pleased with the device. The audibility is good, the battery lasted for 1.5 days - provided there was internet, reading, calling (the Internet was not turned off - all the time - whatsapp, mail, viber, sending and receiving photos). Somehow it started to slow down - I threw out a dozen installed programs - and everything helped (taking into account that there were still about 15 left). I did not use a standard dialer. After the update - I stopped turning it on - it says there is no file. I'm waiting for a response from the service. A very interesting shape of the phone - at first they asked if this was the Iphone 6 - well, it’s very similar.

Review: For such a price, of course, you can’t find fault with it at all, but still... The camera doesn’t shoot at all as it shows... The battery lasts very little (2 calls per minute and frequent correspondence on WhatsApp, a total of 8 hours of work). But for this price these are just nitpicks. You can’t find anything better for this price, for sure at the moment. Screen type: IPS (In Plane Switching) is a high-quality liquid crystal matrix that was created to eliminate the main disadvantages of TN technology matrices. The IPS matrix most adequately conveys colors across the entire spectrum at different viewing angles, with the exception of some color positions. The TN matrix usually has a better response than IPS, but not always. Thus, when transitioning from gray to gray, the IPS matrix behaves better. This matrix is also resistant to pressure. Touching the TN or VA matrix results in a "excitement" or a certain reaction on the screen. The IPS matrix does not have this effect. In addition, ophthalmologists confirm that the IPS matrix is the most comfortable for the eyes. In this *s*m* way, the IPS matrix brings a bright and clear picture regardless of viewing angles, best for surfing the Internet and watching movies. But the most important thing is for image processing and viewing photos. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) - Liquid crystal displays. The very first displays used in mobile devices, and not only in phones. Their main feature is that they have very low power consumption, due to the inability to display color images. They do not emit light and therefore phones are upgraded with backlight lamps. Some phones had several different backlight colors based on the presence of different LEDs around the perimeter of the display. This extraordinary solution was used, for example, in the Ericsson A3618 phone. On this type of display, pixels are clearly visible, and such displays cannot boast of high resolution. In order to extend the life of such displays, they were made inverse, i.e. text and symbols were not displayed as filled pixels, but, on the contrary, inactive against the background of filled ones. This resulted in light text on a dark background. Currently, this type of display is used in the cheapest budget models (Nokia 1112) and as an external display in some clamshells (Samsung D830).

TFT (Thin Film Transistor) - Liquid crystal displays based on thin film transistors with an active matrix. For each pixel there are three transistors corresponding to three colors (RGB - red, green, blue). At the moment, these are the most common displays and have a number of advantages over other displays. They are characterized by minimal response time and rapid development - ever-increasing resolution and number of colors. These displays are most common in mid-range and higher phones. Working resolutions for them: 128x160, 132x176, 176x208, 176x220, 240x320 and others, less common. Examples: Nokia N73 (240x320, 262K colors), Sony Ericsson K750i (176x220, 262K colors), Samsung D900 (240x320, 262K colors). TFTs are very rarely used as external displays for clamshells.

CSTN (Color Super Twisted Nematic) - Color liquid crystal displays with a passive matrix. Each pixel of such a display consists of three combined pixels, which correspond to three colors (RGB). Some time ago, almost all phones with color displays were based on this type. And now the destiny of such displays is budget models. The main disadvantage of such displays is their slowness. The undoubted advantage of such displays is their cost, which is significantly lower than TFT. Based on simple logic, we can assume that in the future TFT will displace this type of display from the mobile device market. The color evolution of such displays is quite extensive: from 16 to 65536 colors. Examples: Motorola V177 (128x160, 65K colors), Sony Ericsson J100i (96x64, 65K colors), Nokia 2310 (96x68, 65K colors).

UFB (Ultra Fine and Bright) - Liquid crystal displays with increased brightness and contrast on a passive matrix. We can say that this is an intermediate option between CSTN and TFT. This type of display boasts lower power consumption compared to TFT. For the most part, Samsung used such displays in mid-range phones. This type of display is not widely used. Examples: Samsung C100/110 (128x128, 65k colors).

TN is one of the matrix types of TFT screens. Roughly speaking, TN are the simplest and cheapest TFT matrices. Viewing angles are the narrowest.
